There's a lady who's sure All that glitters is gold [The lady is one of those people who have lived their life according to what is expected and is approved of and admired by society, hence all that she sees to glitter (i.e. will make her look good in the eyes of others) she considers valuable.] And she's buying a stairway to heaven [Because she has made all in her power to be "good" she has acted happy all these years she considers herself worthy beyond reproach] When she gets there she knows If the stores are all closed With a word she can get what she came for Oh oh oh oh and she's buying a stairway to heaven [She is used to getting what she wants and always gets validated by the people around her. So now even if she gets the thought that she is unworthy, she can still justify her way of life and make her conscience silent.] There's a sign on the wall But she wants to be sure 'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings [She is starting to see the signs that maybe her way is not the right one, but she has lived so long like that that she still does not want to believe. She keeps deluding herself that there is still a chance that the signs are wrong and she keeps going the same way with her life.] In a tree by the brook There's a songbird who sings Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven [As she reaches deeper into her soul she starts to lose the certainty of her convictions and plundges in doubt] Ooh, it makes me wonder Ooh, it makes me wonder [The lady's story makes the narrator wonder about his own life, maybe he is also walking on a path that he thinks he cannot get out of] There's a feeling I get When I look to the west And my spirit is crying for leaving [As he looks towards the end of life and where he is now, he longs to be free from all current circumstances of his life that keep him away from what he really needs and wants] In my thoughts I have seen Rings of smoke through the trees And the voices of those who standing looking [He has seen other poeple wasting their lives and ignoring the signs. They all see the signs of unhappyness and waste in their own and others' lives, but they settle for it because they think it is normal and this is how all other people live.] Ooh, it makes me wonder Ooh, it really makes me wonder And it's whispered that soon, If we all call the tune Then the piper will lead us to reason And a new day will dawn For those who stand long And the forests will echo with laughter [If all people break the silence and admit that following these predermined "normal" lives does not make them happy, then things way change and they might all find true happyness] If there's a bustle in your hedgerow Don't be alarmed now It's just a spring clean for the May queen [With change usually comes some disturbance, but you should move forward without fear. It is needed in order to leave the old and the useless which weighs on you behind and make room for the new and fresh things in your life] Yes, there are two paths you can go by But in the long run There's still time to change the road you're on [Even if you are not happy and feel trapped by circumstance, there is still the possibility to change your life and be happy if you decide to do so.] And it makes me wonder Your head is humming and it won't go In case you don't know The piper's calling you to join him [The lady is now realizing fully that she needs a change and it occupies all her thoughts. Still she has not taken any action.] Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow And did you know Your stairway lies on the whispering wind [The narrator explains to her that her way to true goodness and happyness is via that change (where she will give up all the fake things and people in her life which she pretends to like and replace them with true ones which make her happy and which come from her own soul)] And as we wind on down the road Our shadows taller than our soul [As life goes on and our past is longer than the road ahead (the sun of our lives is setting in the west and as we walk towards it our shadow becomes longer)] There walks a lady we all know Who shines white light and wants to show How everything still turns to gold [There is lady from our story - we all know her and walk by her because she is a stereotipical character of the "normal" and "good" person from our society who simply follows rules and fakes happyness. If we are not that person ourselves then we surely meet them throughout or lives as we observe the "smoke" behind their perfect facade. In spite of the fact that she realized the truth, the lady refused to change and continued her fake life trying to convince others as well that this is the right way] And if you listen very hard The tune will come to you at last [Despite all the fake messages and the fact that most of the people are still silent, if you turn to yourself and your inner voice you can still see the truth] When all are one and one is all To be a rock and not to roll [To stand up for your self and your true happiness instead of giving yourself up for the approval of others] And she's buying the stairway to heaven [Narrator reiterates that the lady will never change - still stuck in her old ways] |

For me the song is about our continuous search for love where with every new partner we find something new. We are caught by surprise by that strong feeling and start exploring this new and relationship and in the same time it is still familiar (we have been there before, we know that it is love). Soon we find out that we have our differences so we can either try to change (but we do we can lose ourselves, change our personality too much) or we can remain as we are, but then we cannot be together as we are not on the same page about too many things. The part about the moon and the ocean refers to the way two people are reflecting in each other and the way it affects them and about the fact that in addition they are both moving (changing) also separately. When we are in a relationship, there is this collective "being" - us, but we still remain individuals. "The shells upon the warm sands Have taken from their own lands..." - this verse is about the fact that our partners also have a past - they have loved, they have lost and we can only see vague remains of their past. And in the end...we are all looking for this one person that will be our last, we make decisions, leave someone, start fresh with someone new in the hopes that we have finally found what we are looking for. However, we never know if love is going to last so every relationship could be the answer that we are looking for or a new disappointment. |
