Alright, so there's a Neil Fallon interview floating around where he says that this one is inspired by the movie "The Fountain", I can't remember where I found it, but if I get a hold of the link again, I'll post it up! |

I think the "Jesus on the dashboard" line is a reference to the song "Plastic Jesus", in which part of it goes as such:
"Plastic Jesus, Plastic Jesus,
Riding on the dashboard of my car."
I'm not sure who originally wrote it, but it's been covered to death. |

This is about a vocano erupting (Inspired by the eruption of Mt. Saint Helen) and millions meeting their iminent doom, when all of the sudden the smoke and ash turn into confetti; at least that's what I assume it to be about. This song's refrain always gets a laugh from me, just a little bit of Neil's trademark humor. |

I recently listened to an interview with Neil Fallon from some social-engineering podcast (Type "Neil Fallon" into iTunes) and in that interview they asked about Neil's song-writing process. He talks about essentially being inspired by a piece of fiction, or current events to come up with his own fictional premise or story for each song he writes. When he's asked about "Animal Farm" and what it's referencing, I was shocked and surprised not to hear not that Orwell's book inspired this song, but rather an old episode of "The Twilight Zone" entitled "To Serve Man".
The episode is about a race of hyper-intelligent aliens coming down to Earth who have a book entitled "To Serve Man", and mankind believe that these space-men are there to solve all of their problems, and bring peace to their planet, only to find out much later that "To Serve Man" is actually a cookbook ("Taste's just like chicken", they say!). To be fair, I never thought Animal Farm the book never really fit well with Animal Farm the song, however this episode fits perfectly with this song. |

A quote from a Songfacts interview with Neil Fallon when asked about this song:
"Written at the same period of time, and I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that I'd moved from a very homogenized suburban setting into a very rural setting. I found it quite magical in places, and was intrigued by sort of the occult magic that happens in nature. That's the genesis of those lyrics" |

I don't think this song is about anything more than how nature is simultaneously beautiful and f*cked up. For the most part, Neil tends to be pretty straight forward with his writing. Not saying he hasn't written some really deep stuff (See "Basket of Eggs"), but this doesn't feel like something that's deeper than: "This is how nature looks, it's pretty bad-ass right?"
This is also the primary reason that I love this song! |

I'm always reminded of the DC character "Lobo" whenever I hear this song, and I'm not entirely sure why. |
