Why? – Thirst Lyrics 11 years ago
Just thought I'd throw this out there in case anybody picked up different vibes than I did on this track:

The first verse puts you in the mind of a man trying to remember something from his childhood, or trying to get back some thought or feeling he's grown up and away from - never getting any closer to what he's trying to remember/feel, but unable to stop trying/looking for it. The act of looking for milk in his mouth and finding only sand means he still remembers what he's looking for or knows that he should be looking/familiar with at least a fraction of it, he just can't recognize the memories/feelings for what they were and wouldn't be able to even if he did find what he was looking for in his own memories.

The second verse describes a bunch of trash in a building that's on fire - movie posters, motherboards and ashes - and someone looking in on the whole mess, watching the smoke rise and thinking about whether or not it's a sign from some god or spirit, a moment meant just for him/her, for whatever the reason. The problem is that there's no meaning waiting in the smoke or created for the onlooker, but that person will always be looking for that meaning, thirsting to see something in the smoke whether or not it's there - and that's the way it will always be.

The third verse describes the last black cowboy alive today - and as much as it's a part of him to say "howdy" to folks or shoot his gun the way a cowboy would, we don't live in a place or time for cowboys anymore, and he knows that. He still has his brand new Stetson locked away, as if he had bought it in preparation for a day that will never come, and as much as he wants to wear it, he tucks it away along with everything that makes him the cowboy he is and can never be again - and he will always thirst like that.
