Awesome song, so beautiful.
I could pick apart the lyrics forever, but i won't. I'' just say I think "de soto de son" kind of sounds like "the set of the sun" when they sing it

Animal Collective – Always You Lyrics 11 years ago
This whole comment is bullshit. This song is fucking painful. It's about accepting death. It makes want to cry and laugh because there's so much love and beauty, it's enough to make you explode. I don't think these lyrics are entirely accurate. I think that, at least a few times, he say's "I hope you'll come back again."

Daniel Rossen – Golden Mile Lyrics 11 years ago
I just recently got really into this song, and so my interpretation might be a little hasty, but i definitely get some kinda feeling from it. Anyways, here I go:

I think this song is kind of written about Daniel himself. I think he sees himself as a really complicated person, who has kind of allowed himself to miss out on a lot of things in life, just because of his complicated, perhaps confused, nature. However, I think he also feels that his strange, solitary way of life has given him some experiences which he has truly loved.

I think the ending part (also just a random stab in the dark by me) is a kind of mantra. When he sings it, he reminds himself that keeping something which he feels is truly important inside can never work, and that it is better to simply vocalize your thoughts.

Animal Collective – Bleed Lyrics 11 years ago
As an addendum to my last thought: i think it could also possibly be about having mixed, confusing feelings, like when you feel "good" and "bad" somehow at the same time.

and also possibly about just having mixed "positive/negative" feelings that are confusing cause they feel good and bad somehow at the same time.

I've never listned to tis one very much, but I do like it. Let me give this a shot. I think ac are really kind of more about feelings, and i doubt he's talking about something really specific, i think it's just more of a vague, subjective feeling. To me, it seems to be about trying to be a better person, and seeing your "bad" feelings, like shame and pain, in a more "positive" way

Animal Collective – Banshee Beat Lyrics 11 years ago
I remember one time i was walking on a beach in florida, where i live, and

listening to this song on my ipod. I was feeling depressed and tired and the first

part of the song kind of seduced me with its ambient, saddish sound. I was

totally taken in by the song before i even realized it. I was completely swept up

in the music, and by the time it got to the more energetic, happyish parts, i too,

was feeling happy and energetic. Just as i was kind of starting to understand

that this song is like an emotional journey, i heard "But I don't wish that I was dead....l" AC, your music has meant more to me than you'll ever know.

Animal Collective – On a Highway Lyrics 11 years ago
One of my faves of all their music. Like you guys have said, one could probably go on about this song forever, so i'll just put one or two short thoughts.

It must be so strange to be singing your close friend's name while he's right next to you. I think ac's lyrics are sometimes almost like mantras they've written to themselves, and the things they say are literally meant to stir up their emotions while performing, or focus them (I feel like more in panda's case haha) However, i've never found a video of them performing this live, I wish they would.

I think the most basic interpretation is just that the song is about a deadly, deadly mysterious disease. The disease is ancient and silent and can take anyone without a sound.

MGMT – Metanoia Lyrics 11 years ago
Great song. Reminds me of when my good friend had a psychotic episode while we were on acid. I ended up spending the night in jail tripping, and he spent like two days in a crazy hospital.

I've come to feel the the middle sections that's about the kid wanting a ticket is really based (sarcastic), and actually pretty funny.

MGMT – Alien Days Lyrics 11 years ago
This song makes me see so many different images and such, it's hard to pin any real narrative down, although i do have some thoughts. Anyway i'll just suggest on thing here. I think "watch my fingers ripping out the lines, if it looks like we could lose" is like Andrew ripping the pages out of whatever book he writes his lyrics on if he thinks they suck, just like his life in general does sometimes.

One more cool thing. I posted this on the Handshake page as well. The two songs have similar lyrics in one part. Alien days says, "can't find dreamer's honey in the hive, if it's right beneath the nose," and the Handshake says, "under your black eyes, honey, right beneath your nose." Did Andrew plan this? Or does he just really like this metaphor?

I love this song. I was looking at the lyrics to alien days, and i noticed they have similar lines. This song says, "under your black eyes honey, right beneath your nose," and alien days says, "can't find dreamer's honey, if it's right beneath the nose." Kind of interesting...

Animal Collective – Today's Supernatural Lyrics 11 years ago
I love the lyrics to this song. I think music is subjective and can have infinite meanings, but anyway, here's one short possibility. It's about letting go. I think avey is kind of writing to himself in a way, telling himself that he needs to stop/continue avoiding defining himself.

I think this is the saddest song I've ever heard. I've loved this band for years and i remember listening to it with my friends, so i'm connected to it in that way, but this song especially does something to me. I listened to this song over and over when i had my heart broken. To me this song is pure sadness.

Panda Bear – Good Girl Lyrics 11 years ago
Total shot in the dark.

Maybe he's talking about the feeling of going on tour and losing his slow-moving panda mind in all the chaos and movement, and maybe the good girl is his wife, waiting at home.

Pinback – The Yellow Ones Lyrics 11 years ago
Alien abduction. The aliens are the yellow ones. The part during the second verse with the call and response thing going on seems like it could be about ufos. "There's some strange shape in the sky.
A bright light over the horizon.
It's changing direction now.
It's headed towards the village, better warn the people"

Anyway, that's just one way of looking at it. A friend told me that a long time ago and it always made sense to me with the lyrics. I think this song is crushingly sweet and sad and weird and beautiful.

Animal Collective – April and the Phantom Lyrics 11 years ago
This song gives me a big ol' eargasm. I love Avey's lyrics, man.

I always thought the lyric was "forgotten easy reaching reaching for the stars and begging me for suffering." and "without a bra, i let her lick around and take me from my suffering."

Lots of times, when I write a song, i'll kind of put myself in the mindset of a different being, and write from that perspective. Anyway I feel like a lot of songwriters do that, and i like to try and understand where these other musicians are coming from lyrically. I think avey's lyrics are so raw and expressive, it;s awesome. I don't think this song is really a coherent story, but it does give me some really specific vibes when i listen to it. I hear all this pain and desperation and loneliness and excitement. It feels like it comes from the perspective of a young person, possibly a girl, and maybe there's some kind of sexual/emotional revolution happening in her. I think I agree with a lot of you about some of the themes in this song. Phantom seems like this crazy sexual, violent, insane, but somehow precious entity in the girl's world. Maybe there's another guy, and her parents have something to do with it too? Idk, i'm too involved already. Also, this song makes me feel like it's summertime.

Animal Collective – Queen in My Pictures Lyrics 11 years ago
I always thought the lyric was "now she can't seem to find an honest man."

This song is awesome. I love the vocal harmonies and the layers of guitars. I think this song comes from a really centered place lyrically. To me, its a beautiful and broken story about a girl who has basically lost her mind and/or soul, and has become a shadow of her former self.

Silversun Pickups – All the Go Inbetweens Lyrics 11 years ago
I think all art is subjective and can mean infinite things.

This song has this really specific weird awesome vibe to it, and although the lyrics are kind of ambiguous, i still feel like i totally understand the emotion behind it. Anyway, I won't get too in-depth with any little extra thoughts about it, but here's a small one. Maybe it's just me, but i feel like parts of this song have this really visceral, physical feel to them, and that's where the singer lives. When the singer says the line about new machines, I think that it might be a metaphor for technology and our growing dependence on it it, and it's a warning: stop playing with new machines.

The National – Conversation 16 Lyrics 11 years ago
I love this song, and i think its meaning is completely subjective and it can be about infinite things. Nevertheless, I do have some thoughts about it. I think there's obviously a theme of emotional emptiness. He compulsively hangs out with his "friends," and together they delve into excess, in an attempt to find some kind of connection or purpose. He experiences great highs and lows throughout the day and doesn't have a clue what to make of it all. He's emotionally numb because of his lifestyle, and he considers himself a source of negativity to all those around him. Anyway, that's just one feeling this song gives me. I also love the part where he sings about the silver city and the silver girls, and the black dreams. I think this is a metaphor for an urban area of some sort, a place of chaotic extremes. This place is representative of the singer's mental state. In this city, all the girls are the same as the city itself, extreme and chaotic. Thus, the silver girls only increase his level of emotional and spiritual confusion. This gives him the black dreams. All these feelings the singer feels only serve to worsen his mental state, and it becomes a cycle.

The Handsome Family – Far From Any Road Lyrics 12 years ago
I love this song. I first heard it on "True Detective," which I love too; but i think this song is amazing on its own. It gets me high when i hear it. The lyrics are amazing and so is the instrumentation. I think the lyrics are subjective and can mean infinite things, but i sort of have two main thoughts about them. The first thought is just a more raw interpretation, where the lyrics just paint a vague picture or story about love and longing and death. The second thought is a more structured interpretation (although still about that stuff) where the male voice is from the perspective of a human man in the desert (far from any road), and the female voice is the perspective of some sort of deadly desert creature. Basically the man comes upon the creature and when he touches her, she stings him or bites him or something like that and he dies. And when the last light warm the rocks, mountain cats come drag away his bones.
