| Satyricon – Phoenix Lyrics | 12 years ago |

The song speaks of legendary Phoenix bird who, when old, gets burned into ashes by the Sun and then arises again from the ashes, symbolizing life and eternity. The night before his rebirth Phoenix awaits the morning when the Sun God burns the her with rays, ending her suffering, that possibly refers to his present irrelevance since there "was the word." Interesting is the use of femininum when refering to the Phoenix ("queen of the souls"), the Sun God ("her kiss of redemption"), probably a reference to matriarchal pagan societies. Apparent are the references to Christianity. "The word" is a customary reference to Christian scriptures, "slaves to wretched imagination of yesteryear" thus likely are the Christian religious ethics and cult and finally "all that grows in the skulls of the living are the flowers of fear" to presence of fear of revenge for sins. As the dawn comes, Phoenix burns and arises reborn from the ashes. |
