While this song is about LSD, it is more strongly about the working man's paradigm. It is about getting away from the endless cycle of work society puts upon itself and into the things you actually enjoy doing, the awareness of which is amplified by psychedelics. He sees that there is no light at the end of the tunnel society wants you to walk through, and would rather spend his time doing psychedelics and skateboarding with his friends than participating in the endless grind. I like how the lyrics "Get up to get down now" exemplify this idea that we wake up in the morning basically so that we can get work over with and go back to sleep. -- "Some will try to re-capture the same flag, but I play it smart and recognize the summertime passed." Anyone who has ever done acid can relate to this line...Most people that trip and experiment will never be able to relive those moments in the same way, and a lot of people who take acid a lot or on a consistent basis realize that as time passes the trips get less and less meaningful, eventful, and enjoyable. -- I don't think that's what it's about at all. Aesop Rock is realizing that he can't escape the working paradigm and that even though his friends want to play getaway forever, he knows that the society isn't gonna change and that he has to get back into it. "the daytripper anthem goes 'wake, drop, walk to aquarium' whistle while you work like a canary lung all work and no play makes jack a dull boy to carry drugs i sorta see it as my last blast summer skateboards and sloppy psychedelics in big numbers" This is not a song primarily about LSD. It is deeper than that, and explores the awareness LSD brings to you about life in the norm of society. |
