Seems that Wilson is describing the general boredom and fatigue of modern society. The first stanza describes this quite well, and the line "I hide it well" is suggestive of how many deal with their mental health. The other verses are along the same lines and can easily be interpreted, discussing the mundane repetition of life when we fall into patterns that never seem to change. The chorus is a bit harder to decipher. I feel that the snow/ice is symbolic of the often uneasy terrain of friendships and relationships; perhaps we conjure problems or overreact to small ones so we can illicit a reaction from other people that's more interesting than our stale lives. "I only meant for you to lose your balance in the snow; slip on the ice so I can catch you fall" and "I just made it up so I could watch you crawl" are suggestive of this. I also believe it's "I'm getting anxious", not "I'm getting at your side". "It's always worse in the shopping malls" maybe refers to being overwhelmed or overstimulated by the world. I think this song, generally, describes depression and anxiety, but that may just be me relating it to my own experiences. Either way, fantastic tune. |

| Dream Theater – Lifting Shadows off a Dream Lyrics | 11 years ago |

Such a beautiful song. I couldn't really connect with it before, but now after having experienced some things, I think it fits perfectly within my life and I can understand the lyrics so much better now. To me, it's about moving on from a failed relationship. From the first verse, it's fairly clear that there's a man, and he's in pain and mourning about something, likely after just ending a relationship with someone he loved very much. I think the "dream" throughout the song is referring to his "desire and fear" to move forward and get on with his life, but shadows are covering his dream and stopping him from doing that. But he finds a new girl, someone fresh, new and better, and she helps him by, hence the song title, "lifting shadows off a dream". It's also really well described with the line "she listens openly". I love that. But, I think the best lyrics in this song are "she can turn a drop of water into an ocean". I love what that creates, that she's taking whatever sort of attraction he has to her (and so scared and fragile because he's still in pain) and turning it into something bigger and better by listening and giving him reassurance that she will be better. It's such an uplifting song! |
