It's pretty obvious to me that this is a deep song about a guy who feels like he doesn't belong and like even his loved ones don't understand him, they think he's eccentric and crazy when he tries to follow his heart. He feels lonely but he is tired of acting and pretending to be someone else just to please everyone else."Play to the gallery" means acting like something you're not. So he takes the long way home, which means he enjoys spending time by himself, he's being true to himself and he just doesn't care what anyone thinks anymore. He takes the time to stop and smell the flowers. He doesn't care where he's supposed to be, he's just enjoying the process of getting there. It doesn't matter if people think you're eccentric, as long as you're enjoying your life and following your heart. Who cares what they think? At least that's what I think of when I hear this song. |
