Cake – Where Would I Be? Lyrics 17 days ago
There is definitely sarcasm, the answer to "where would I be?" a whole lot better off without that poisonous abusive hatred mislabeled as love

Janis Joplin – Me and Bobby McGee Lyrics 8 years ago
It a song about drugs and inter-venous drug use, and it's a perfect juxtaposition for real life and metaphor; when your drug use has reached a point that the way you do your drug is venously, you have no life, much like way back when; when you couldn't have lyrics that openly spoke of drugs one had to allude to it by use of metaphors, here Kris is using metaphors for real-life cuz a real life isn't something an addict can have.

"busted flat in Baton Rouge" - not high quality drugs, didn't get high as anticipated with the drugs they got as they were

"waiting for a train" - the initial exhillarating rush once syringe delivers drug to your vein

but then from a random street score (not their regular dealer) they got some primo stuf that "took them all the way to New Orleans"

Kris also writes about the things addicts will do for their drug of choice, anything, including sex favors for truckers, sound like a hand job for a trucker with ED. And She had to do anything and everything that trucker wanted and did it willingly as he had the good shit as the lyrics say "We sang every song that driver knew"

"freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose" as in Kris beat his addiction, and gave the drug up as an addict in recovery, but as an addict he still craves it, his freedom from addiction by abstaining isn't all that great, he had to do it cuz he had lost everything and had nothing left to lose, if he had anything left, he surely trade it for good drugs

somewhere is Salinas is where Kris got clean, he had to do because addiction is a jealous bitch, the drug has to be top priority and won't to second seat to anyone or anything, that's what addiction is all about, Kris couldn't do that, something meant more to him or at least as much to him as the drugs, if it didn't he'd be dead cuz that's what addiction does, demands your entire life and leaves you dead or incarerated

He didn't have a choice, it's was get clean or die, so the freedom isn't all that great for him, he simply had nothing left to lose, and while he had to give it up in order to have other things important to him in his life, he's still an addict, he wants to get high, his body wants to get high, when your an active addict, all you need to be OK is to be high, feeling good was good enough from him

it's a song about one subject, the life of an addict, who kicked his habit, the song's literal lyrics about life, and like the artist that Kris is the song is about drugs and how the only life one has in active addiction is a metaphorical one, much like in real life lyrics you can't speak about drugs but only allude to them, for an addict your life isn't reall lived , it's only alluded to

or something like that, for some reason artists never explain, I guess so that it can have many meanings to many people, but I think it's OK to tell what they meant when they wrote it

Cake – Mexico Lyrics 9 years ago
He's narrating in the first person about a soon to be failed relationship, and giving the reasons why although very subtly

There was a boy, who fell in love with a girl, it could have been a great relationship, as she knew he was good to her, and later in life she ends up regretting it.

She seemed so perfect to his blinded by love eyes, because everything seemed to be so right, just like the lyrics written, the words could be the exact same meaning and everything in sync (like the boy thought) a match and a lighter,

but you start to realize in the next verse it may be unrelated coincidence
he has a flame (someone he is passionate about ) but her fire isn't the good type for a relationship she's going to torch the relationship

His flame for her burned bright, but her prescribed burn of the romantic relationship was even brighter

then it becomes evident they are not different lyrics talking about the same thing nor twin souls.

Plainly he was high, and she the sky

well litterally he was foolishly high on love (or drugs) and couldn't see she wasn't all that, she was in the sky flying to Mexico to an adult themed vacation not unlike Hedonism II

She knew how he felt but never told him, I guess it was hard for her cuz she probably knew it was a match, but she was a sewing oats type of girl

He knew she was traveling for vacation, but had know idea it was a casual sex themed adult vacation

He wanted her, and she thought it would be impossible for him to want to be with her since she didn't really care about him like he did her, but liked having fun with him

He was in love but still would have gone to Hedonism II with her, she didn't believe him could do it cause he loved her so she went without him

Now she wants him, but he has his doubts

He didn't know the nature of the mexico trip, but he knew he wanted her, after the mexico trip she realizes he truly did love her and she wants to be with him, after what she did he now knows to doubt her

Cake – Alpha Beta Parking Lot Lyrics 9 years ago
The song is indeed about about standing in the parking lot of the Alpha Beta grocery store in Southern California, specifically the one that was on the corner of Mulholland Hwy and Mulholland Drive. You'd have to confirm it with John, but rumor has it he was there sometime around 1977 when a young boy, barely a year old was sitting in the child's seat of a grocery cart that was knocked over. He hit his head on two shelves on the down and stopped breathing. While it only took the Fire Department and Ambulance three minutes to get there, and they were able to revive the boy, I guess he appeared quite dead. He evidently witnessed the cart go over and watched "the son go down" the many idling cars were the multiple Fire trucks and emergency vehicles that responded.

But again, you'd have to check with John or Vincent

Jane's Addiction – Then She Did... Lyrics 11 years ago
most likely about the scene where Perry introduces his mother to his girlfriend. She [his mother] was dead then she did [his girlfriend died]

He would have introduced them

but his mother died, then she did

Throughout the song the writer doesn't make it clear whether he is talking to his mother or his girlfriend, so it's easy to assume the he is talking to one when he actually talking to the other.

because his mother was dead and then she did

so at the time of the song they both were [was] dead as in they both had died

The Sound of Music – So Long, Farewell Lyrics 12 years ago
It's crazy to think that certain songs have lyrics that are so much a part of motion picture -- or rather have motion picture so much a part of them -- that the words, or lyrics, come complete as lines including specific names for who sings them.

*note to SeLF, oeuvre is not the same word as au revoir and coo-coo clocks in France say cuck-coo even though their German
