Overall the song is about the paradox of celebrity culture, and how those who achieve it are both above the law and at the same time are bound by rules that don't apply to most people, where the most severe punishment is the loss of their celebrity status <"my curse">.
They close with a pitch for Pepsi, crowd noises and gunshots. I think there are subliminal lyrics in the crowd noises, but I have not been able to break them out. |

Right, but before it was a single, it was a song, and before it was a song it was a feeling. I have no question that it refers to the years 1967 and 1968, as others have stated. What remains mysterious to me is the dynamic that changed and the oblique references to mind-expansion from the past (1967) that turned into introspection and possibly paranoia or other psychopathic behavior in the presence (1968) and the "I've got to know, can you tell me please don't tell me" of what appears to be a state of mental collapse. |

I think the song was written in Western New York, back when the Maniacs were a local band and were only starting to make a national name. There are days here when it simply is not worth getting out of bed. |

Nico lived in Berlin, she stood exactly "five foot, ten inches tall" and shared other characteristics describing the subject of other songs on the album. It is hard for me to believe that these details of Reed's muse are mere coincidence. While the relationship was described as volatile, by several accounts Lou and Nico mixed love with hate and some say they had a fling in Berlin. After the breakup of the Velvet Underground and before the release of Berlin, Lou and Nico reunited with John Cale, thus they performed together without being forced by Andy Warhol. |
