This is one of the rawest jams that Neil Young has ever made. He has the heart of a gunslinger. This song is probably about heroin or some other drug. I would bet on that in Vegas. Every song about heroin is about life and sex and birth and death all at the same time. It's about killing what you love, and loving what you kill. If you hear any song that really makes you feel that way, I mean a song that takes that feeling and stabs it into your heart with a vendetta, then chances are that song is about heroin. FYI.
Anyways, Neil Young is one of those underrated guitarists who doesn't do crazy neoclassical arpeggios or blisteringly fast scales. No, what he does is play the note that he wants to, and he uses *every single scrap* of sound that the guitar makes to express a feeling. Not many people do that. No one does it like Neil Young. When you listen to this song, you are listening to one of the few true masters. Know it and love it. God bless you all. |

You live for awhile. You sail happily on the seas of reality, giving no thought to how or why you make your way. Then you have a moment of deep contemplation, and you hear this song, and you sing along even though you've never heard it before. You know the words if you have lived enough. They are the lyrics that you were so clumsily, lovingly dancing to your entire life, though you never knew it until Neil Young sang it for you. That's the meaning of this song. Listen, and love it. |

You live for a while, just living what it is. Then you have a moment when you wonder why you did anything that you did. Then you hear this song, and you sing along with the lyrics, because they are your thoughts. Then you understand what this song means. |

There seems to be some confusion about what this song means. This song is about the moment when you realize that you are born to die. Drink as much of a fifth of whiskey as you can and listen to the Arc/Weld version of this song, and you will understand what I am saying. You can make a lot of elaborate conjectures about what this song means, but it is simple. A boy is born to die, and this song is about when he realizes this fact. Sad and triumphant, and heartwrecking as only Neil Young can do. Love it. |
