I'll take a shot in the dark and say this song is about the politics of asking someone out - two people too afraid to make that first move and the anxiety of letting that fear seep into everything you do around each other. |

I'm pretty sure the song is about a relationship in some capacity, especially taking into account the music video, which has that obvious "take-me-with-you" theme. Lines like "What have you done", "We'll get through, somehow", and "This is only temporary" suggest they're going through a hard time, which I'd assume is the other partner cheating. By asking to be "another risk [she's] running", you could ask what are those other risks she's taking? I think the song is about getting through times like these. It's the opposite of a song like Ghost Man On Third, which is from the perspective of the person being cheated for and feeling regret for it. |

This is a very meaningfully written, brilliant song that I'm sure is meant to mean a lot of things to many people; to me, personally, I interpret it as describing the feeling of wanting love reciprocated, of being willing to trade everything for that person's love, but, that not being possible, hoping that person will feel as you do, even when it's clear they don't or wouldn't:
"Even though I know // I don't want to know // Yeah, I guess I know // I just hate how it sounds". |
