| Joni Mitchell – The Tea Leaf Prophecy (Lay Down Your Arms) Lyrics

Song about her parents. Molly is a pseudonym for her mother, Myrtle McGee (her actual maiden name) and the perceived discontentment she had with her life. She met her husband, William Anderson, when he was on a short leave from the Canadian Royal Air Force.
Joni was once quoted as saying that her mother would actually say to her "don't have kids when you grow up," making Joni to feel like she was a burden. |

| Joni Mitchell – The Sire of Sorrow (Job's Sad Song) Lyrics

This is actually Joni's song about suffering from Morgellons, a little-known illness that is typically seen as a co-infection with Lyme. Suffers of this illness are plagued with unpleasant skin sensations, chronic fatigue, joint pain, and a host of other problems. It robs you of sleep, a normal life, and unfortunately, doctors have not historically been kind to Morgellons sufferers.
These lyrics speak directly to the torments of this disease and to the suffering that is compounded by unknowledgeable physicians. It probably takes someone who suffers from the disease to truly understand and appreciate these lyrics.
Thank you Joni. Visit the Charles E. Holman Foundation, seeking awareness and a cure for Morgellons. www.thecehf.org/ |

This is the song that made me fall in love with Joni's music. It's amazing the amount of emotion behind what is basically a chordally simplistic song. But that's what makes her an amazing song writer. |

I've seen many comments that this song proves he "loved Joni Mitchell." I'm trying to see the correlation. Anyone else hear / read / interpret that through this song? The best connections I can come up with are...
"There was a girl in Paris whom he sent a letter to" - Joni makes multiple references to Paris / France in her songs. "Free Man in Paris," "California," "In France they Kiss on Main Street," etc. Prince has acknowledged writing to Joni in his youth...
"Every day's a yellow day." This is a stretch - Big Yellow Taxi?
I would love to hear some more ideas / thoughts about this... |

| Joni Mitchell – Raised On Robbery Lyrics

Clearly she is a prostitute. Anyone have any ideas about the line "raised on robbery"? Is it meant to imply she feels she is getting something (cash) for nothing (prostitution) or stealing something from others (or herself)? [Like trading your body is no big deal.] Or is it more blatant in that she steals from johns?
I'm sure there are several interpretations of this specifically. Just curious if anyone has any... |
