I'm probably way off but I took it as she's singing the first verse & chorus from the perspective of the rich and famous who see themselves as better than everyone else-- "Don't you think that it's boring how people talk? / Making smart with their words again, well I'm bored" being looking down at common people and being bored with what simpletons they are "Getting pumped up on the little bright things I bought" living for the material "We're so happy, even when we're smiling out of fear / Let's go down to the tennis court" Looking so perfectly happy because of wealth or fame but not truly being happy, and going to hang out and gossip and be "cool" and above everyone else Then I took it as her switching point of view to herself in the 2nd verse, literally flying on a plane for the first time and looking at becoming famous, and back to the other point of the view in the bridge. Idk, just how I thought of it when I heard it. Anyway, I love Lorde's style, and it's great to hear something a little different on top 40 radio. |
