My thought on this song is that fire = purpose or a cause you believe in strongly (such as gay marriage, equality for all, etc.) and burn = the spreading of the "fire" This is a song about standing up for what you believe in and being with others share the same dream because there is strength in numbers and the more people that believe in the same cause the greater chance for acceptance or change. |

This is one of my all time fave's by Mr. Costello (and he has many in my book) I always thought this song is about the jilted lover killing both her lover & the "other" woman (be she prostitute, underage lover, or simply another woman). Once the deed is complete she "watches" the detectives to make sure she is not on their radar (like a chess game she needs to be at least one step ahead of the detectives)... Hell perhaps she is even sleeping with the detectives to throw them off In my mind she gets caught in the end anyway. There is nothing in the song or the video that leads to this conclusion. Perhaps it's just the logical ending for the story unlike the unresolved ending in the song (the last verse ends with the cops telling the parents their missing daughter is dead... then the T.V is turned off??????? (It only took my little fingers to blow you away)) Also my interpretation of the lines - Though it nearly took a miracle to get you to stay It only took my little fingers to blow you away - is this: Though it nearly took a miracle to get you to stay: Out of all the movies/ Television shows on the hundreds of cable stations they chose to watch this station with the detective story playing It only took my little fingers to blow you away it only takes the press of a button to turn off the TV/ end the story |

Just because Prince wrote & sang the song does not mean that the gender of the person devoting their love is male therefore the "would you be a happy boy or a girl" depends on the point of view (POV) of the person wanting to give their love just my $0.02 - I could be way off base - perhaps it was all in the rhyming scheme as others have mentioned ;-) |

One of these meanings is to have an orgasm - Shakespeare used it as a double entendre many times in several different works including Romeo & Juliet But upon reading some of these meanings, the ages of the Toadies when this was written (I believe they were still in their teens), the park name in Texas, and a few other things...... The more literal translation of this song makes the most sense |

This is my all time favorite song that is not only sung by Britney but also written by her as well Whether or not it was written about the loss of JT or regret for how she treated him (cheating) or just heartbreak in general when she sings it you can hear the raw emotion Such a simplistic (lyrically), melancholy, beautiful song Britney you should write a couple more songs for yourself and not always conform/give in to the poppy BS your manager or whomever gives you to sing |

Prince is an AMAZING artist that can do it all - writes his own music (as well as music for others (ex: Nothing Compares to U - sung by Sinead O'Connor), plays guitar (and just about every other instrument under the sun - but guitar is his personal fave), and sexy to boot I think my favorite guitar solo of his is when he did "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on the George Harrison Tribute (or some other Beatle thingy) Purple Rain is a great song - top 3 fave out of all Prince Songs |

The singer/songwriter has ADD & is telling us what it is like growing up with ADD & how people perceive him as ADD not as a person with ADD (which he is) I can relate on some level - my son was diagnosed with ADD (he is definately NOT hyperactive) when he was in kindergarten & I can see the second he "tunes out" or "sails away" (as the song says). I can also relate on some level to the people teachers/friends that chalk everything he does good or bad up to his ADD. He is a person & deserves not to be known for his condition, but for himself |

this song is about a broken relationship & the one doing the breaking up doesn't want the relationship to end but knows it is unavoidable because the other person won't "say something" to keep the relationship alive (even if just for a little while longer), while also knowing that the other person is the one they will love forever. This song makes me think of Against All Odds -> Phil Collins in which he stands their watching her walk away - knowing she will never come back (hence the title "Against All Odds") but stands there mourning his loss watching her leave & knowing that she won't even look back & "see him cry" |

IMO some others have hit this nail on the head. This song is a nod to the losses in his life & how unbelieveably they occured. His sister's death at the hands of her husband & LeRoi's untimely death due to complications from an accident. Dave is agnostic bordering on atheistic (as am I) and writing seems to be his coping/healing mechanism. Perhaps he was depressed as some others have stated & needed to let go of some of those horrible feelings. Makes me feel like Dave needs a big hug & lots of support from the people around him. |
