I believe the reason this song is broken up to two songs is because the first song takes place at night and the second song takes place in the morning. It's obviously about ex-lovers meeting up. I imagine the two of them at a party or pub, and one of them ask the other to dance (after both of them are pretty drunk). The dancing is conjuring up moments to their past relationship and they can't fight their feelings. There's a reason why the words time machine is being repeated in the lyrics. They're questioning why they ever broke up and the idea of hooking up is on both on their minds. The first song is very sexual, i.e.,'Your body looks good tonight//I wonder if you'd care,//if I was still in your shirt.//The way we were when we first met.' They want to go at it, but there's still some apprehension as to what will be the consequences of their actions. And that's why I believe the song is called Our Most Brilliant Friends. In questioning why they broke up, I'm sure a friend of each of them told them to move on because that said person isn't right for them. This isn't the sole reason why they broke up, but just enough to trick themselves into thinking their friends were the reasons why they broke up. So, when they say: 'And all our most brilliant friends are doubting themselves,' they really mean: 'what the fuck do they know when they can't figure out their own lives.' Quite an interesting message, because who really knows what's best when everyone has their own problems or faults. Thus, the lines: 'But the fact is you're good,//yeah, we know that you're nice.//But we don't get a world and we don't get a life,' means: 'fuck it; everybody gets hurts and life is short, so might as well have fun.' When you're drunk and you see your ex, I believe that sentiment makes sense. Before I get to the next part of the song, I think the lines: 'I want you to celebrate//the fact our bodies can recreate//new versions of ourselves,' are very powerful. Basically they are telling each other, and also fooling themselves, that they've changed for the better since they last met. It is repeated over and over again to convince both of them that what they're doing is the right thing. On to the next part. There is silence and then a low hazy sound for a minute to bridge the two songs. I think it's try to convey waking up from a hangover or from regret. There's probably some fighting or arguing going on between the two when they wake up. The boy wants to go back into the relationship, while the girl is unsure; she has a fleeting heart. There's probably more arguing and yelling. Then the girl gets to tell her side of the story, thus explaining how the relationship failed. I'll try to give a synopsis on each stanza. If dreams come true Then you and I would make a two And if I had one more I'd dream that I stayed on your floor And while my parents were alive They'd say "Rebecca, now's the time To play the next card to your chest" This is pretty haunting. She wants to be in the relationship. She really does, but she doesn't know if she can commit to him. The line: 'And while my parents were alive,' doesn't necessarily mean the parents are dead. I think it means they got divorce, and this why she has a hard time falling in love. She really likes the guy, and wishes she never left him, but she knows she can't go back. It wouldn't be fair to him. You thought about me and you said go I thought about that and I said no You couldn't understand why a girl like me Thinks the way I do But I can't stand a boy Who thinks things through like you This is more about her fleeting heart. She can't commit; even when the boy was all in on her. This also states why they broke up. He's way too practical in is his life; maybe even boring, as he was very thorough. She likes to be a bit more spontaneous and carefree. This was probably the reason that justified her fleeting heart to leave. She always had one foot out the door, but this was her justification to leave. Let's go back to the beginning Of the nights that I've been regretting Let's go back to the beginning Of the nights I've been regretting She contradicts herself. She wants to be with him, because she misses him. He loves her, and she misses that. She questions will she ever find anyone who loves her like this. Now with you I always thought We'd live behind a front door Right now you don't think that You can live anymore And I'll call and call and call and call And call and call and call Anyone on the phone So tonight I'm not alone Even if she believes it or not, she thought he might of been the one to marry and grow a family with (Now with you I always thought//We'd live behind a front door). It's a bit selfish, but she is telling him how bad, and how hard it was for her to break up with him. She understands that he's depressed that it's over, but she wants him to know how distraught she was when it was over, i.e., she couldn't be alone. Let's go back to the beginning Of the nights that I've been regretting Let's go back to the beginning Of the nights that I've been regretting More contradictions! And you say baby you lied in your song It takes all my courage not to sing along And now my beating heart belongs to my drum These lines are pretty powerful. Maybe he was upset with what she was saying, so she tells him, 'you don't even know how hard it was for me. I wanted to be with you so bad, but I knew that staying out of your life was best for you.' It's kind of melodramatic, but it's a hell of a line. Maybe she did love him; and she was evoking the line, "if you love someone, let them free." I met a boy who grew up in the mountains He really loved God and got me thinking about things Like appreciating everyone that I can call a friend Seeing life as a group of tests to see through to the end But I'm a quitter, I don't think he knew That I'm still thinking about you I'm a quitter and I'm ashamed He said he'd come back for my brain She even tells him about a relationship she had with another guy. She even tells him that the other guy had better qualities than him, but still couldn't be in the relationship with the other guy because she was thinking of him. I can't tell if she is being sincere or not. She might believe that's the reason why she left the other guy, but it could also be she doesn't believe in love. And you say baby you lied in your songs It takes all my courage not to sing along And now my beating heart belongs to my drum Repeats how hard it was for her. I just wanted to see that new Tim Burton movie Or hang around with Laura, Jane, and Suzie And I definitely want to be a rapper But I'm just a northern girl from where nothing really happens And the bones inside my shins are crumbling The bones inside my shins are crumbling The bones inside my shins are crumbling The bones inside my shins are crumbling The bones inside my shins are crumbling It's from all the crunking I've been doing Most of this it is quite ambiguous. I'll try my best here. I think during her explanation about why she can't be with him, she talks about how frustrated she is about her own life. She wants the simple things in life like seeing a movie and just hanging out with her friends. She doesn't care for flashy items; she wants to live a simplistic life. The line: 'And I definitely want to be a rapper//But I'm just a northern girl from where nothing really happens,' I think means she wants to live a flashy life, but she can't because of the environment she grew up in. So, again, she contradicts herself. I don't know if it's intentional or not, but she can't decide what life she wants for herself. The bones crumbling get back to the relationship at hand. She thought she was strong enough to resist him, but she was wrong. Maybe she planned to be at that party or pub where he was at so they could intentionally meet? Who knows. The crunking part is hard to decipher. From the Lil Jon knowledge I have, I know to get crunk in this club is to get high and drunk. So, I think crunking, the verb, means she has been really depressed since the relationship ended by drinking and smoking. Hence, the reason why her bones are crumbling and she can't take it anymore. How it ends is also ambiguous. I like to think they got back together, but who knows. This isn't scientific. I'm just a schmuck who likes this song and is giving his OWN interpretation of it.
