Gem Club – I Heard the Party Lyrics 12 years ago
artful use of symbolism in writing through out this amazing work. The opening line describes to me how someone's tragic death disrupts the normal goings on in a community. Funerals are replete with flowers serving to wake friends ( neighbors) from out of their mundane drowse. The songwriter's lover has died of a silent illness of enormous magnitude (depression leading to her suicide???) that broke her body like a song and now he attends the funeral in something of a state of shock. "I heard the party was here." The second stanza seems to allude to his out of body experience with trying to hold her spirit close as she slips away to leave him feeling the pain of his alone-ness without her. She leaves him to continue on without him through death's doorway and he is left feeling only a sense of all that drove her to do this to herself: "You stood there alone." This is indeed a cautionary song to those who would take their lives and leave devastation in their wake.
