It's about David missing Marc, about Marc not being there for him anymore like he was when they were younger. Even if you only know as much about their history as you can glean from what little has been written about them (which isn't much, because David doesn't like to talk about him), it's pretty clear. (His name's even in the song, in a sly, sideways way.) In a broader sense, it's about missing someone who was important to you during a time in your life that was also imporant to you, in part because that person lived it with you. Especially when we're young--we never make friends again like the ones we make when we're young. Dreams you shared, plans you made, fun you had--when you eventually grow apart and you lose access to all of it but the memories, you leave a part of yourself behind. (What he said to KS about it being nonsense--there were people who knew both of them who would get it if he didn't obfuscate. Like he says in Heat, he's a liar, but he had reason to be.) |
