this is definitely my favorite song by Belle & Sebastian, i love the chorus the most. obviously, it's about high school, not fitting in with your peers, and just the shit you have to go through when your young (dealing with other people's expectations, hence the song title). this song is so freaking pretty to me, i feel like i personally know the girl he is singing about...i love it when songs make me feel that way c: anyways, lovelovelove this one, thank you Juno :) |

this is one of my favorite songs of all time...because i know when im older im gonna look back on my wasted youth years and think what Marina is singing. even though i know thats not a good thing :( my interpretation is that a teenager (Marina) is thinking about how her life is playing out, and instead of being the troubled, junkie, poisoned adolescent that she's portraying in this song, wanting to be a teenager from more simpler times, or just a classic happy teen. instead she's living the wasted youth lifestyle (♥) but wishing that she hadn't. and the line "and the day has come where i have died...only to find i've come alive" is meant to show the result of drugs...she's destroying herself with drugs and alcohol, and the closer she comes to realizing she's dying, the more alive she feels. i couldn't relate more to this song..which makes me feel (super super super) suicidal...x |

Listening to this song, it basically sums up my teenage years at the moment. It is about teenagers who are numbing themselves with drugs and recklessness, trying to distract themselves from heartache. "if your still breathing, then your the lucky ones...cuz most of us are heaving through corrupted lungs..." (referring to smoking) "setting fire to our insides for fun" (referring to the irony of anything you smoke..your basically setting fire to your system, but its so fun) "we are the reckless, we are the wild youth" (referring to the fact that she and her friends are the kids who do what they want) "chasing visions of our future..." (referring to procrastination...they want a bright future, but deep down know that the lifestyle they're leading is pulling them farther and farther away from that) "and if your still bleeding, then your the lucky ones..cuz most of our feelings they are dead and they are gone" (referring to the numbing effect of the drugs...they are trying to just stop their feelings altogether so they don't have to deal with the heartbreak) this is one of my favorite songs of all time ♥ |
