| I think this song is Isaac reflecting back on his past and specifically how negatively and cynically he viewed life. You can really see a change from Long Drive and Lonesome Crowded West to Good News, their sort of gloomy and gritty pessimistic view was really prevalent in their earlier works, hence the line "And it's true that the clouds just hung around like black Cadillacs outside a funeral." He's sort of embarrassed that they always focused on the bad and seldom the good, "I didn't lie and I ain't sayin' I told the whole truth." His embarrassment and even regret really shows in the last half of the song. Isaac wishes he could go back with his experiences and tell himself that life wasn't all bad, "I've got the time, I got the hours, I got the days, I got the weeks. I could say to myself I've got the words but I can't speak." Keep in mind, this isn't about the music they made, it's about his whole past outlook on life, it just showed through their music, "And we were laughing at the stars while our feet clung tight to the ground. So pleased with ourselves for using so many verbs and nouns." Isaac thought he knew everything, when in reality he hadn't experienced enough in life to be passing such judgement on it, "But we were all still just dumb, dumb, dumber than the dirt, dirt, dirt on the ground." | |
