I know this is many, many years later but the first time I heard this song a long time ago I knew he was speaking in tongues and I also understood the meaning. The girl said "I'm not ugly anymore." Her problem is that she feels like she is ugly, and can't believe anyone who tells her otherwise. "At least that's what they say" is people telling her she's beautiful, but "I don't care what they say" is her tormenting herself. She's "wishing they would close their eyes" because she doesn't trust their sight. Once the Holy Spirit comes on her and heals her heart, she starts crying out "I'm not ugly anymore" in tongues, which is why the guy sings "no, no" afterward. At the end of the song, it repeats the part about "thinking maybe they could figure out what's wrong" because she was always looking for a human being who could make her feel beautiful, but only Christ could do it. |

| @[CherrySweet:31606] I know this is many, many years later but I just heard this song again and it made me remember. The first time I heard this song a long time ago I felt something very strongly. I knew he was speaking in tongues and I also understood the meaning: she said "I'm not ugly anymore." | |

It certainly is open to a lot of different meanings, but I still think it's about a girl. At least, there's another person he's talking to, rather than an object. I think he's saying that he loves her, but at the same time he's very protective of her as a friend. He's struggling with the fact that he still wants to be there for her, but now that she's turned him down they can't go back to being friends. The line "It seems to me that that's a fine way to keep you off your feet" is saying that he's worried she won't be okay without him, followed by "it seems to me no other side for the two ideas to meet" because she doesn't believe him, and she doesn't want to be patronized. There could very easily be drugs involved, as people who have a history of drug use will often become very determined to help others to avoid the same fate, sometimes when they themselves are still using. I think the point of the song is he's saying "If I can't be the one to take care of you, please take care of yourself so I won't worry anymore." The line "It's good to see you go" is saying that he'll try to trust her more, to be okay without him. And of course, underneath it all is the fact that he's using her problems and the idea of protecting her to distract himself from the fact that she turned him down, and his own broken heart. Hence the accusation of terrorizing him in his sleep, and that she "cut the chase too deep," meaning she tried so hard to discourage his affection that the friendship was lost as well. |
