Arcade Fire – My Body Is a Cage Lyrics 12 years ago
To me this song speaks not so much about anxiety or losing a loved one (although these are also valid opinions) but more about the feeling you get when you realize that the reality you live in is not enough to satisfy the deepest parts of your soul, that you need something more to be complete.

I think this song is about someone who is searching for a way to become enlightened, to break free from the bonds of the material reality and become "one" with a higher power.

"My body is a cage that keeps me from dancing with the one I love" refers to the urge to understand the universe and the world we live in. "The one I love" is some kind of higher power. "My mind holds the key" means that it is possible to achieve something more that just money, pleasure and materialistic stuff. The singer knows this but he just hasn't found his way yet. There is also a lot of criticism of todays society and how our lives are often really quite meaningless and empty but we don't notice it until it's too late, "it's a hollow play, but they'll clap anyway".

This is just my 2 cents on the song, it might not be what it really is about. A beautiful song nonetheless!

Paul Simon – Spirit Voices Lyrics 12 years ago
I think it's like dharmacase said, that this song tells the story of Pauls trip to the jungle and about his experiences with ayahuasca.

The first verses tells the story of how he travels into the jungle and realises the wisdom that lies inside the forest. He also sees a different side of life, probably one he hasn't seen before.

He then talks about the process of meeting the shaman or "brujo", drinking the ayahuasca and learning something from the trip, which he then tries to take with him to his everyday life.

I think the portugese parts represent the lessons he learned when he drank the ayahuasca, and that he is reminded that his own faith lies in the hands of himself.

This is ofc just my interpretation, it might not be what Paul intended at all. But these are the thoughts that are awoken in me when i hear the song :) Anyway, a very beautiful song from a superb record.
