I think this (beautiful) song is about looking up to a mentor, but realizing that our passion reside elsewhere. Obviously the mentor and student have different views on things, but the student is not fit for those responsibilities and is ashamed for causing trouble for the mentor before : "I wanted to make you proud But I just got In your way I found a place that I can hide" The student is worried that he won't be able to change his life around if he keeps this way : "Now everything Is changing But I still feel the same Are we running out of time" The student desperately wants his mentor to understand that this life isn't for him, that his passion reside somewhere else. "What do I have to do To try and make you see That this Is who I am And It's all that I can be" He appreciated the mentoring, and he hopes that his mentor will still approve of him, that it won't all be lies. "I tried to find myself Looking Inside your eyes You were all that I wanted to be There must be something else Behind all the lies That you wanted me to believe" "Now everyone Is saying That I should find a way To leave It all behind", to me, is referring to something the student would like to do instead, since his mentor position in the world is "better" in the eyes of everyone else. "What do I have to do To try and make you see Trying to be like you Isn't good enough for me" means the student wants something different for his life, or he wouldn't feel complete. And he's ready to make the change but doesn't want to loose the support, promising that he won't let his mentor down : "And I won't let you go And I won't let you down I won't give you up Don't you give up on me now" |
