Frank Sinatra – It Was A Very Good Year Lyrics 12 years ago
I couldn't agree more. Another idea that flows well with your idea is the universal progression of human life. When we are young and in the spring of our lives, wedon't enjoy life and embrace it for all it is...in the summer of life, we tend to realize how great life can be, but as we are in the prime of life, we tend to take it for granted, thinking it will last forever...in the autumn, while still enjoying life, we have the perspective of life lived that enables us to appreciate where we are and where we've been...finally, winter sets upon us, and I would like to think that in the end, peace and appreciation for a life well lived allows us to know we were truly a vintage batch of wine, and that our life was indeed a very good year. To sum up, I think the progression of capacity to understand life and its parallel to aging are what make this song truly amazing. We may enjoy life with more vigor in our younger years, but we are able to interpret and appreciate our lives more as we age. This song makes aging a beautiful thing...which most American culture does not. Bravo.

The Avett Brothers – November Blue Lyrics 12 years ago
I think the relationship ending based upon the unwillingness of the girl (or other party if you want to take the gender out of the artist) is obvious, but the use of November is the key to this track's brilliance. If anyone knows Frank Sinatra, he did a song called "A Very Good Year", that represented a person's life. Spring was the beginning, when everything in life was fresh and new and exciting, Summer was the prime of life, Autumn was the portion of life of reflecting fondly and still living, and Winter was the end. I think of November Blue as representative of a relationship in this same way. November is the next to last month of the year and is typically bitterly cold and the epitomy of a "glance at a harsh winter to come." November Blue is a sad song that encompasses the true beginning of the end. The"what ifs" are pouring in, the "coulda, woulda, shoulda's are all you can think about, and while you dream about that alternate reality, you know that a cold long winter is waiting. The end is upon you, and all you can do is contemplate why it is ending and what you might have done differently. The genius of it all, and also the saddest part, is the realization of the answer coming at too late of an hour to fix the problem. November Blue is a modern day Greek tragedy.

The Avett Brothers – The Clearness Is Gone Lyrics 12 years ago
Loss of innocence. Not necessarily in a young way, but it works there too. The moment of clearness is the realization of what the other party in the relationship actually is...but that moment is gone in a minute...overshadowed by all the doubt and romanticism that any romantic relationship brings with it. The other party isn't right for you, but the moment of clearness is so brief...typically we are dreaming about what we want the other party to be..."Well your hair fell on me like I dreamt that it would... when I dreamt that your hair was long..." We dream about making our significant others what we want them to be and don't leave them because we think they will become what we want. The moments of clearness are those brief seconds of truth when we realize what that significant other truly is, or what they will or will not ever be. The linens represent the haze in front of our eyes that a relationship creates. The moments to see through that haze are few and far between. In a minute, the clearness is gone.
