This song is about being in love with a past lover and being willing to redesign your intentions to suit their needs or wants once they've decided to terminate a relationship. It's about keeping them in your heart, even though you can't display the kind of affection or "speak but a word" to the person who used to be your lover, but clearly not wanting to lose communication with them as a friend entirely (I can't take all the wreck involved) because you can't contain your feelings. Gen states that she's going to put her desires towards her former lover aside ("paint myself aside like something second in line") for the sake of his happiness, stepping aside for his sake, but secretly desires nothing more than for him to come to her in her dreams and make love to her- a topic that confuses her moral compass. To close, she states that "everyone is taking their cards", choosing their roles- and states that (as usual) she'll be the queen of hearts, presumably by containing her feelings and resolving to become "silver", or secondary in his eyes by resorting to being her past lover's friend. |
