I think this song can relate to any kind of major struggle in a person's life. I think it is a lot about war though and definitely was a perfect song for the Hunger Games Catching Fire movie. Being a person who has fought depression, and suicidal thoughts, I can't tell you how much this song means to me. I think it represents your opinion on life... This is just my opinion. I don't know for sure at all of course what this song means.

Lorde – Royals Lyrics 12 years ago
I think that the song meaning is teenagers taking drugs or the theme is drugs in general. I know a lot of people who take drugs, me not being one of them. I am going to break down most of the song, and then I will summarize the whole song at the end so it makes more sense.

I've never seen a diamond in the flesh
I cut my teeth on wedding rings in the movies
And I'm not proud of my address, in the torn up town
No post code envy

- This part of the song is talking about a torn up town or the ghetto I would hate to say and how she/he lives there.

My friends and I we've cracked the code
We count our dollars on the train to the party
And everyone who knows us knows that we're fine with this
We didn't come from money

- They are counting their money on the way to the party, consequently making sure they have enough money to spend on drugs. Everybody who does the same thing knows that its and addiction and that they would rather spend their time and money getting high because that's what's important to them.

But every song's like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin' in the bathroom
Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room
We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams

- This is about taking the actual drugs and how you can't control what you do. Trashing the place, and hurting people and themselves. From the "we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams" I am supposing that means they are taking ecstasy.

We're bigger than we ever dreamed, and I'm in love with being queen
Oh oh ohh life is game without a care
We aren't caught up in your love affair
And we'll never be royals
It don't run in our blood
That kind of lux just ain't for us

The first part of this verse is talking about being the queen/druglord and being in love with that kind of life. The song talks about how they aren't caught up in a love affair and that refers to popular/ athletic people who love their life. Lorde calls these people "royals" because they are treated like "princesses" I would know because....

I thought this song was so deep and moving. The message of this song is to live life the way you want to. I really do think it is about teenagers, and drugs. Lorde is still a teenager if you didn't know. She is 16 and maybe she knows about these things at her highschool. I know about these things at my highschool and I am only a freshman. Life is crazy honestly in the town that I live in. There are some really bad crowds in my highschool that are involved in drugs. If you still don't believe me that this song is about drugs, the verse "crystal, maybach, diamonds on your timepiece" is talking about crystal meth, maybach is a kind of drug, and diamond which are on your timepiece (people have been known for disquising drugs as diamonds on watches.)

I hope this comment was helpful to your interpretation of the song.
We crave a different kind of buzz
