Bright Eyes – Ship in a Bottle Lyrics 9 years ago
Abortion seems fitting. The father and mother, creators of the ship, arguing whether to abort it or not. From Conor's perspective, he knows he cannot have a kid, he can't be a father, he can't be there but doesn't want her to be haunted by abortion. She doesn't realise his situation and wants have it. These lines summarise the meaning in my opinion:

''But if you knew how it worked
We'd have to grow old''
He'd have to stick around, but feel burdened and letting down of his kid.

Then, to make her realise,
''If you knew who I was,
We would never grow old''
If she truly knew who he was, she would want the abortion too.

People prying in his life, like someone you just met giving you advice and telling you what's best for you.

@[Robindra:7408] I agree, but both kinda make sense. The lines get blurry between what is once (in the past) and what is now expected of you (to stay away)

Bright Eyes – A Poetic Retelling of an Unfortunate Seduction Lyrics 10 years ago
@[summerstars:7392] I agree it's probably about a prostitute, a brothel. Like he's lost his first love and is trying to make himself feel better with sex, but all he feels is dirty and hollow. He realises the sick hold his first love has on him, sick because it can never be.

Bright Eyes – The Awful Sweetness of Escaping Sweat Lyrics 11 years ago
Conor wants to escape, and is essentially using this person for sex. The person has strong feelings for him while he just sees it as an escape from his personal situation. He does enjoy it, but he realises that he's hurting the person, that's why he's regretful,
'I awake in the light feeling hollow and selfishly warm'.
Warm from the person, hollow from the guilt.
In the end, he escapes heartbreak, trying to bring the other to escape too, but they can't let it go so easily.

Bright Eyes – Messenger Bird's Song Lyrics 12 years ago
Wow. How does one apply for the 'people who understand Conor Oberst lyrics club' ? I've been listening to Bright Eyes (which clearly entails Conor Oberst) for some years now. Sometimes I treat it as poetry, sometimes I just listen and enjoy, or feel with him as he despairs, rejoices or bleeds. Despite the amount of personal time and thought I've put into listening to his music, I still wish everyone I know could also listen and appreciate it too, at least have the opportunity to. Just because you listen to Bright Eyes and Conor and try to understand lyrics, doesn't mean you have more of a right to listen. I know the music must mean a lot to you, which is great, but you viewing the music in your way doesn't mean you should be pretentious about it, especially not Bright Eyes music. But hey, what do I know, you clearly '''''''''''know your shit'''''''.

Bright Eyes – Amy in the White Coat Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is horribly. It's beauty is its tragedy, I appreciate it so much despite it making me feel nauseous. I know all the details about the molesting and rape are disgusting, but what gets me is

''I don't know what I said then, Hello or Goodbye''

Like she'll never have a chance, like how he can never truly know her because of her pain, when all he wants to do is in some way make her, for a second not feel like dying..
I apologise for any rant, hungover on a rainy day & this song does things.
