The song and the whole BGWTB album is all about Layne and the steps he chosed to take that lead the band to a neverending hiatus and, this is the saddest and damned thing, to Layne's death. The tunes Jerry has written for this album are the last goodbye that they had not the chance to say to Layne. But the lyrics are not some candies or words for the occasion, the band wants to clearified the fact that Layne as been an asshole and a liar that decided to follow at one hand the easy way and to the other hand the love for Demri 'till the other side. "Time to change has come and gone Watched your fears become your god" Layne has been many many times in rehab (mother says 15 times, what the fuck!) but his addiction was always the winner of this battle also because he wasn't so serious in this duty. At the end he always relapsed because think or manage a new life without drugs was the hardest part of detox: "how can i live without drug? how I start to manage my life without my routine? how I can manage the stress?" "Overwhelmed, you choose to run Apathetic to the stunned" Instead of changing his entire life (changing city, State, closing himself in a rehab for some years) he decided that heroin was his only comfort and he has run away in his apartment, closing outside more and more people 'till he was only with his dealers. Apathetic towards his friend and always stunned from drug. "You feed the fire that burned us all When you lie To feel the pain that spurs you on Black inside No one plans to take the path that brings you lower And here you stand before us all and say it's over It's over" When Layne entered rehab and remained clean only a couple of days (because, in the end, he always had the same people around) promised that he would change, he would return to work with greater commitment, actually put the groundwork for the end of the band and friendship with the guys on the one hand they wanted to go back to work, but they had to deal with a situation more and more unmanageable. And as in the song "Over Now", everyone knew that the story was ending, but they were all afraid to say it. "It might seem an afterthought Yes, it hurts to you know you're bought" The core of the song is that ok Layne: you has been an idiot because you have decided to die in that way (he also said so to Sean Kinney "i'll not comeback, I'll die this way and thats all") but you decision hunted us for years. Think that "our beautiful friend" had been reduced to a pile of rags without teeth hurts us, but this as been your decision because no one would ever wished that everything ended how it ended. |

I'm not a fan of Mark Arm, especially because his grumbling rants, against everybody up there seattle, makes me wonder if he had some jealousy problem or if he like to talk shit on everybody. I can understand his frustration for not being included in the "seattle four" but he have to accept that there are many variables and that many times the success is made 50-50 of talent and luck. But he will always be considered one of the founders of the latest innovative music for 30 years now. Anyway, these are my thoughts: this song is about the "scene" and how, when the business overcome the music, everything start to be about money, shit and phony classic rock dude, sex drug and rock and roll. "You're so tormented Demented Indebted To all the assholes (Just like you) Who've come and gone (Before you) predictable Just plain dull Why don't you Blow your brains out, too You're so into yer shtik You're so hounded Ungrounded Surrounded By scum suckin' leeches Who will shovel your shit Sweep your dirt (Hoping for an...) Feed your ego They never tell you no All of you Make me sick You're so into yer shtik" You play the role of the damned rocker that, as a clichè, sooner or later will die, or because of drugs or because commits suicide. This parts seems to be about Nirvana entourage. Courtney and Kurt, the tormented couple of Seattle trapped by their own fantasies, sorrounded by too muck "yes men" that, indeed of spank them, feed their addictions for the money and for stay under the spot light of their fame. But a great role in this scenario is played by Courtney, who, on the basis of a difficult and complicated childhood , pour out on her husband and on the group, her whole madness (madness that seems more like a mask than a reality). And Mark Arm says: kill yourself, make us this favour. Well, Mitchell's got a new girl She's nineteen Hollywood model Star of the screen Well, she's up here To support the scene It's all part Of his rock and roll fantasy This guy, as in a movie, now have this model girlfriend (little story: The alternative scene was always being against models, considered a bad role model for women. One day, Axl Roses arrived in the back stage with a model and Courtney Love started to began to tease her and eventually Axl told Kurt: hey, shut up your bitch! and Kurt, referring to Courtney: Shut up bitch! Or Beth Liebling, in the backstage, screamed Models! Models! as a warning signal when she saw them coming - ah, the irony!) that, as at Coachella, play the role of alternative girlfriend of the alternative rocker, but it's all a bunch of bullshit! Stan was at the bar With bandaged hands They tried to dry him out And he got mad He cut his fist Punchin' hospital glass Made his myth Now he's trapped This part is obviously about Layne Staley (Stan). Bandaged hands because of abscesses from heroin, sourrounded by many people that would like him being clean and sober. But, according to Arm, he is ok in the myth of tormented guy. He escape from rehab, he's ok being an addicted. But now, even if he would like to stop, he is trapped into the cage build by himself. ( a note: Mark Arm considers himself cooler of Layne and Kurt because he overcome his addiction) Susie's just a girl Who's doin' her job That came to New York And wanted a car Workin' with the management To the stars Kissin' ass Is a part of her job Well, it's part of her job Yeah, it's part of her job Oh she loves her job What the hell She does it so well Susie is a girl that work in the music management, and even if her job is, for a great part, kiss the ass of spoiled musicians ( again, musicians that have sold their souls to majors and have kicked the music for money) she enjoy her job. and seems to be a great sin because the business is full of shit! I'm not perfect I live a life of mistakes I'm not perfect But there's one thing I can't take You are into yer shtik You're so into yer shtik And they're so into yer shtik Fuck you all, you make me sick A little awareness from Mark Arm: I'm not perfect, I made mistakes and so on. But you do a lot more crap to me and I will not stand it. Fuck everything and everyone. |

Layne was very happy of the amazing success of the album that was so different from Alice. He received a call by Columbia's boss that said " Hey, great success, eh?? Good boy, blah blah bla. "By the way", you have 9 days to finish Tripod.!" And hang up. Another stressfull episode while he was trying to avoid it. "Once again you see an in, discolored skin gives you away So afraid you kindly gurgle, out a date for me" You look at me and see my pale skin, so do you think I'm dying. (Label's boss always thinked and said that rescue Layne was like beat a dead horse.) "Now the body of one soul I adore wants to die You have always told me you'd not live past 25 I say stay long enough to repay all who cause strife" Demri was not willing to detox and led out his wild lifestyle. Is an "j'accuse" from Layne: if i'm in that state of mind is because you (Label) are so ignorant and stupid that forced us in 2 years touring and tight me in a forced contract. I'm stupid too, because I've my brain to understand the good and the bad; but I'm responsable of 30 people and I can't simply step away and being my self, trying to kick the habit. The media, the label and all the money maker are evil and vampires that are slowly killing me. I'm guilty, but you're guilty too you idiots. |
