I think what I find most interesting about this song and have NEVER been able to shake since I first heard it in like 8th grade, is the ending. "I came here expecting next to nothing, so thank you for being that kind of girl." It has always kept my mind so busy when I listen because okay whether literal or not, I take it more literally He walks into a party and everything is boring. He finds a girl that is interesting and pretty and takes her back to his room. I like to think of this as passionate sex because of the "love is a verb" I don't think they're actually in love, but I think it's that feeling when you first meet someone extremely awesome and you have this passionate rush and it feels like 'love' at first. They express that with sex. And then the other interesting thing is the format of the lyrics. The first two lines of each verse are actions. Enter the party, enter the room. But the second two are very emotionally loaded. Nothing is the same after tonight, he's afraid of her seeing his scars. This could be literal or it could be metaphorical for him essentially saying how amazing it is to open up and be passionate with this girl but he's scared she's going to see his 'scars' And then he says in the bridge that if the world ended, he wouldn't change a thing and I think that is a more powerful part of the song than people acknowledge because he just met this girl and already he is content to die by her side. And then to tie in with how I started, I came here expecting next to nothing, so thank you for being that kind of girl. So this could go a number of ways: I came to this party not really expecting much special, so thank you for being that (nothing much special) kind of girl. And this could be meant sarcastically or in frustration (as the preceeding two lines have gone back to the sex visual, maybe that's all she wanted and he wanted more.) I came to this party not really expecting much special, so thank you for being THAT kind of girl. and THAT kind of girl typically refers to a slutty girl if you pronounce it how I mean, but it could also mean that kind of girl as in THAT girl who's got it all. So I came here thinking I'd get nothing, but instead I got a special girl. I began our relationship expecting nothing but sex, so thanks a lot for putting in nothing but sex. or lastly: I began our relationship expecting nothing but sex, so thank you for being THAT kind of girl, so again, he expected just sex but to his surprise she turned out to be one of those one in a millions. The 4 different possibilities always go through my mind and really take me all over from happy to sad! |
