The song is about a depression. His greatest hits are his self inflicted pain. He is too hard on himself, and "a punch in the gut some black 'round the eye there's red from my lips and i'm asking god why there's a bump on my head and a hole in my heart" are not literal pains, but figurative pains that are emotion and because he "beats himself up." He also sings "they spit cheer up and they scoff, I laugh cheer down or fuck off" which to me says he is also saying that he doesn't care that people think he is a downer, he just accepts that is him, and if you don't like it you can "fuck off" |
