@[Crane42:12655] Completely agree. "With your triumphs and your charms, While they're in each other's arms," is the kicker. |

Just a little insight. Take it or leave it. I have not read A Room With A View, but I came across this quote by E.M. Forster, from the book: "We cast a shadow on something wherever we stand, and it is no good moving from place to place to save things; because the shadow always follows." This isn't a huge part of the song but when he says "His shadow is cast wherever he stands," perhaps Nick's saying that this Paradise Lost type, 'old-testamenty' God is an all-pervading presence you can't ignore because the knowledge of his judgement or whatever saturates all life. |

| Bob Dylan – Can't Wait Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| @[day5628:8369] I always assumed this was about some later girl, but your parallels seem pretty ept. If it was Sara, wow. "After all these years, you're still the one." | |

| Patti Smith – Kimberly Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| @[Putingrad:3778] This is what I'm thinking. The usual conflict is whether it's about her sister or her daughter. The lie that I just noticed it "I rolled in the grass and I spit out the gass". I think it's about pregnancy. | |
| PJ Harvey – Rid of Me Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| The chorus frightened me the first time I heard it. In fact it still frightens me a bit. | |
| Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – O'Malley's Bar Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
He seems to be having some sort of existential crisis. Think of Raskolnikov from Crime And Punishment by Dostoevsky, who commit's a brutal crime based on humanistic ideas which he eventually realizes he can't believe in no matter how hard he tries. Consider the line "I had one long hard think about dying, and did exactly what they said." And I know Nick admires Dostoevsky. There are these kinds of thoughts all through the song. About free will especially. And he mentions his wings, a definite hint at some concept of human transcendence. I also have heard talk of the song being a sort of sequal to When I First Came To Town on Henry's Dream, at the end of which he says: "And god-damn this town For I am leaving now But one day I will return And the people of this town will surely see Just how quickly the tables turn" Just thoughts. |

| Conor Oberst – Lenders in the Temple Lyrics | 11 years ago |

It's "A telethon we drunk dailed." Not "A telethon, we drove down." Very important line. One of the ones that hits me most. That's maybe just me though. |

| Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Higgs Boson Blues Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
@[jimah:825] I absolutely agree! Existential dread is what I get. I wonder if Nick WANTS to believe in the soul, but the Higgs Boson... well, he wants to believe in some kind of meaning, but doesn't know if he can anymore amid all evidence seeming to point to the contrary. In 20,000 Days On Earth it looked like he'd given up on his very defining ramblings about God, which he said were most pervasive in his writing when he was on a lot of drugs, so I think he's coming to terms with a world where, looking, as a sober person, objectively, it seems like the self is really all there is. No soul, no plan, no big picture, rudderless, screws and nails falling out of planks, and the "Devil" is man-made. Not necessarily my views, but his case is compelling. Or perhaps I just hear my own current existential crisis in his lyrics when he meant something else entirely. It make me want to cry actually. I even felt sad for Miley Cyrus when I thought she drowned at the end. But Nick said he thinks she's probably just on a lilo. |

| Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Midnight Man Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| I always feel like "Everybody's coming round to my place" is about all the guys who want to shag his wife. She is a model, and it does make sense with the whole Odyssey thing. If that shouldn't make me laugh, well, I don't care, it makes me laugh. | |
| The Beatles – Dear Prudence Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| Absolutely wonderful how there is a literal meaning to this song, about Prudence farrow, and meaning that is relative to all of us, that too much prudence can stop us from being part of everything. He really nailed nailed it with this one. He created a classic. Shelley might have tipped his hat, I think. I should really go through all the Beatles' and John and Pauls stuff one of these days, because I'm certain there's so much I don't know that I'm missing out on. Love. | |

| Thank you! Bloody hell I've been confused. | |
| Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – O Children Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| Yeah, in another song Orpheus goes down to Hell (instead of the Greek place - which I believe might be the Underworld?). But then, he also "hit a G-minor 7" and woke God up: "God was a major-player in Heaven." So, aside from writing kickass lines all over the place, he pretty much hakes up the whole Orpheus & Eurydice story wherever he likes. | |
| Thom Yorke – Atoms For Peace Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
One of Thom's best songs, in my opinion. Moreover, it has his love for Bjork written all over it in sparkly gold ink. I think this is a rare side of purity and love for Thom. What I mean is he doesn't show this side of himself in much of his writing-so hopeful. Maybe in Separator: "If you think this is over then you're wrong." The music is pure and innocent sounding, like he's taking a reflective moment to stop and look around, let love in (Nick Cave reference unintentional), and believe in himself. I agree that it's "So many allies, so many allies." It makes sense to me that this, perhaps his sweetest song at this point of his career, is for his special lady. I think she had encouraged him so much and helped him to believe in himself and telling him he has so many allies (Something I suspect Thom personally really needs to hear) -- "feel the love come off of them, and take me in your arms," she says. And now he's just saying "I want to eat your artichoke heart" which is the most badass way of saying I love you. It's also vintage Thom to say something that great. It is just classic him. But, you know, Thom would be disappointed if there weren't, like, seventeen interpretations to this song, and the lines are personal enough that they have individual meaning and can be personal to others for different reasons. That's great art, if you want my opinion about it. I love this song. |

| Ryan Adams – Strawberry Wine Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
I have a tiny little thought. I read a little book on writing called Negotiating With The Dead by Margaret Atwood. There was this whole long section about how a writer is someone who travels to the other side, the underworld, or whatever, and brings back their stories. And the dead generally give their stories for the price of... blood. It was all very metaphorical, because Dante and Homer and Virgil didn't really go to the underworld to write down their stories. But I think this underworld is a state of mind you create in yourself in order to create something. And you pay in blood. Blood represents loneliness and being misunderstood I guess. Ryan sings "Don't spend too much time on the other side, Let the daylight in." And it might not be what he meant, but, to me, it's a reminder to be kind to myself and live in daylight sometimes. |

| Bob Dylan – Spirit on the Water Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| I do think it's very spiritual. I think when he started writing "Spirit on the water" he was kind of worshiping. There's definitely a girl mixed up in this song though. | |
| The Shins – Port of Morrow Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
Just a thought: Must've been a world of evil clowns that let it happen. But now I recognize, dear listeners, That you were there And so was I I think it means that you tend to think "What kind of evil was that?" but James sees that he and all of us are made of the same stuff those evil clowns were made of. A scary thought. We're all capable of this evil. That is my 5 cents. |

| Lifehouse – Sick Cycle Carousel Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| Totally. Personally, I think the sick cycle is lust since he wants to "tame this mind." To me that's the most likely thing a man would want to tame. | |
