James – Come Home Lyrics 6 years ago

Yes it is weird because I always had this argument of whether it was "paid for sex" or "prayed for sex" and also whether the "paid for" had a double meaning. Odd that nearly all the lyrics on the internet seem to miss this out as I thought it was a standard version with those lyrics in.

The Cardigans – Rise and Shine Lyrics 9 years ago
Probably way off target but I did wonder whether this might be a song about depression and even perhaps life coming to an end with the line "I want it all to be gone tomorrow".

Despite being sung in a jolly upbeat tempo, some of the lyrics come across as being quite dark "wounded moon" "sun bleed down" and "waves break through". Regardless I think it is a very poetic song with strong imagery.

Microdisney – Past Lyrics 9 years ago
Just a good slagging off of yuppie London in the 1980's.

Certain types still living in the glory years of empires (Falklands war etc) and the rich with their conspicuous consumption contrasting with a country where there were increasing pockets of poverty (highlighted by the prostitution comment as a "well paid job").

Plus there's a critique of pop music "waving from their videos", keeping the masses happy and refusing to engage with the social issues of the day and acting as escapism. At one stage he did "The Smiths will wave from their video" which was a bit unfair (they did at least cover social issues) but there was conflict with Rough Trade who were using all their resources to promote the Smiths and Microdisney didn't get a look in.

I especially like the line about "go back to work/you're all alone/old fashioned weak and childish". This I think is specifically about the 1984-1985 miners strike in England where we were treated to daily propaganda from the government, newspapers and TV about how the miners would lose and were wasting their time. You can see the same pattern of propaganda in the Junior doctors strike in 2016, so still relevant today.

Microdisney – Town To Town Lyrics 9 years ago
Definitely about Nuclear War but mixed in with other stuff.

I'd say it was a critique of modern society and the trivialities that affect people's lives when there is so much more important things to worry about (war etc). Always saw the lines "Me and my ex-lover/will accept each other" and "why don't you call me/I've got nobody" as sardonic. Ie bombs flying around and all you can think about is shagging. Thought the nobody might have had a double meaning (no body).

Not sure about the Town to Town bit and the fate of the wide open spaces- perhaps just areas devastated by war?

The Smiths – Shoplifters of the World Unite Lyrics 9 years ago

I'm sure it is this simple explanation that's correct. I always read it as suggesting the poor should start the revolution and not be too worried about their methods. Always there is other stuff going on in Smiths songs, merging different themes- political and personal, but I think he is quite comfortable with the idea of people going out shoplifting.

Microdisney – Birthday Girl Lyrics 9 years ago
You're born and then you die and the bits in between aren't great because of the world we have created.

Brilliantly written especially the "Zero years/come to seek damnation/and a veil of tears". Angry rather than depressive.

Interesting to know that. I have always found it a sad and deeply moving song. I think she probably developed the experience to be very much sympathetic to the man.

I saw this as being about a care home and a man left with nothing but memories, many of them sad (perhaps a lost wife or a failed romance) and an outlet for those memories in the music that allows him to relive this painful experience time and time again.

Thought it was Gin House floor. Always saw that as a mixture of bar work and/or prostitution.

Interpretation as good as any- specifically written around the time of the 1980's miner's strike in the UK where the papers were trying to break the strike by saying "10 more miners" gone back today type thing.
