Ministry – So What? Lyrics 6 years ago
The first two verses are about the narrator being disgusted with his 'bread and circuses' environment, up until "I only kill to know I'm alive" where he reveals an underlying sense of powerlessness and alienation. The final two verses reveal that the narrator's belief system has become warped to the point that degeneracy is his virtue; this irony culminates in the line "no one listens to reason, it's too late" which could have equally been said by the ones whom the narrator percieves as enemies.

Richard Harris – MacArthur Park Lyrics 9 years ago
Although this song has been a punchline for a long time, and for good reason, I still think the original makes its own weird kind of sense. The first verse is probably about the future (it ran one step ahead) that the songwriter no longer believes in (like a striped pair of pants), the second about the past he no longer remembers (I recall the yellow cotton dress), the chorus is about these things fading into the darkness of his mind (melting in the dark) because he can't really feel them (I'll never have that recipe again), and the last part before the chorus is about seizing the things that you can feel (I will drink the wine while it is warm). Kind of unsentimental, if true.

Jimmy Buffett – Margaritaville Lyrics 9 years ago
I wonder if this song inspired the movie The Big Lebowski. Think about it: an extremely chill ex-musician who often wears flip flops and is always holding a mixed drink, looking for something he lost (ransom money) while dealing with his insane friend who believes (correctly) that the whole thing is a scam, he suffers tragedy after tragedy, until he finally just gives up and moves on. The obvious "woman to blame" is Bunny, although for some characters it would be Maude, and for Walter it could be his ex-wife.

I guess it's more of a theory about the meaning of DKR.

This song curiously syncs up with the themes of the movie The Dark Knight Rises. The first verse echoes Alfred's contrition for his role in creating the Batman (which, by the way, is a jarring change from how he felt about the subject in The Dark Knight), the second verse echoes Bane's appropriation of the Bat armory and subsequent tormenting of Bruce (with "the solace we seek" referring to Bruce's desire to die), the third and sixth verse have the "refuge for the coming night" which echoes Selina's speech about the "storm coming", as well as the "heaven" and "future of eternal light" which echo Alfred's fantasy (which quite literally could not be realized without a fight), and the seventh and eighth verses echo the battle on the streets of Gotham between the police and Bane's forces, especially the "battle flags" and "sharp and burning sword" which echo the burning Bat logo. I can't remember off the top of my head if anything in the movie was like the fourth verse.

The Presidents of the United States of America – Boll Weevil Lyrics 12 years ago
Some lyrics say it's "I tried to coax him out with chocolate pies," others say "I tried to coax him out but he would not try surprise," neither seem to be right.

Rush – Distant Early Warning Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is just too much for a single comment. So I'll just say that the line "take a page from the Red Book, keep them in your sights" is most likely a reference to a famous quote from the Little Red Book, "political power grows out of the barrel of a gun" (sights = gun sights). It's a subtle satire of a person who is hopelessly intoxicated by hatred of the Red Scare; the song "Red Lenses" from the same album is much less subtle about it, even directly referencing the National Midnight Star (a news program in the fictional universe of SCTV, a satirical sketch-comedy TV program from Canada that was popular in US at the time).

Genesis – Domino Lyrics 12 years ago
I always thought this song was about LSD, mostly because the singer says "windowpane" (slang for LSD), and also because the song seems to be about a lengthy and unsettling drug trip.
