| How To Destroy Angels – A Drowning Lyrics

Um, I don't get all the hate here. I mean, the comments about the song being about the earth got voted way down, as also those about it being about a relationship ending? Those meanings do fit the song, whether you don't agree does not make them any less valid.
And neither is it the point whether you like or not the relationship between Trent and Mariqueen. If the website's name doesn't make it clear enough, this is about sharing what we think are the meanings of the *songs*, it is not about the singers. Whether their relationship is this or that should be commented elsewhere, if ever. |

| Air Supply – Making Love Out Of Nothing At All Lyrics
| 10 years ago

The way I see it, the singer's paying a compliment to their partner. He's experienced in many ways, and he's jaded enough to not care about many things, but along comes this other person that can make him find love again, out of his apathy if you will ('out of nothing at all', because he's been out of love for so long), and he's completely blown away by this person, and they definitely stole his heart. He's in awe of how this person got away with it, and he's telling them in song.
Or maybe it's because I'm reading fanfiction and I want it to fit my OTP.

| George Michael – The Strangest Thing Lyrics

It's a really dark song in disguise. The music is light and sweet at the beginning but it sudenly turns to the minor key and feels twisted. As I see it, it's talking about depression –the way people suffering from it tend to hide their feelings and try to appear light and happy (because depression is often seen by outsiders as just plain weakness) but they cannot get away from their inner darkness. 'The liar in my head' might be that same darkness that whispers in their ears that they're not worthy or not enough. There's no escaping from these thoughts, and so they ask for help: 'take me to some peaceful land that I cannot find inside my head'. My own take on 'the thief upon my bed' is that depression depletes the person of the energy to get up in the morning, and they don't find motivation to even open their eyes, and so depression is again the thief that robs their motivation and willpower.
On the other hand, this song is part of 'Older', which opens with 'Jesus to a child', which he reportedly dedicates to Anselmo, and so the second part, where he talks about not finding a person that says 'I love you' back to him and 'wakes' him from this state with the aid of love, might be him just missing his lover, taking to him, trying to move on but not being very successful. |

There's also how the music itself signals a change of pace when entering the 'That's all there is' bit; it turns dramatic and ominous there whereas the rest of the song is almost upbeat. |

There's a word that I cannot understand between "And the lessons I have learned" and "I would rather be alone…"; sounds like 'defeat', but that doesn't make any sense. I've looked for it on other websites but nobody has that bit. Anyone else can understand what is that he's saying? |

" He got what he wanted, and will most likely move on to the next conquest, seducing his target with the same smooth lines. "
Yup, that's why 'let me show you the world in my eyes' is repeated in the end again and again, presumably to different recipients. |

This. 'I'll drink to that' isn't even sarcastic, if you consider how so many people follow a hard day with a drink. For people suffering depression, every single day is a hard one. There are SO many 'couldn't do today's. |

| Depeche Mode – In Your Room Lyrics

The way I read it it's the singer, who is very much aware of how us listeners interact with his music, is talking directly to each and every one of us.
I mean, to a lot of people, their room is a sanctuary of sorts, where they feel most in control of their surroundings, where they go to sleep and dream, have their favorite possessions and listen to their favorite music. Which frequently is stored in a portable device like an ipod, and you listen with earphones. It's a very intimate way of listening; your favorite band is singing to you, personally, to your ears.
And it's him putting himself in the position of the song: he 'comes to life' in your ears when you decide to play his songs, and when you do, he can kind of live through you, live in your breath (when you sing along) and by extension, 'feel with your skin'. But you are in control; will you play the song? Or will you leave the device in your dresser ('leave me lying here') and go do something else? Of course they add the dark s&m undertones because come on, this is DM. |

I don't think it's fair to put the blame on her just like that. Any of us were there to know what really happened. And the thing is, he's the one with the massive fanbase ready to give him love, and he was going through a hard time and could use some of that love us fans could give him. She on the other hand had no ears to hear her version.
I do think it's an amazingly beautiful and poignant song, and having witnessed the effect of divorce on the children I think it's heartbreaking. |

IDK, maybe. But that's the beauty of Mr Reznor's lyrics, that he crafts his songs ambiguously to be understood in so many ways, and any of those are equally valid. I frequently find myself trying to do that, to write in this ambiguous way that can be understood in many ways, and failing miserably - I admire his craft in succeeding there. The people talking about Plato or Mark Twain are only relating these lyrics to things they have read that also resonate with them in this specific chord, if you will; those are simply other ways to explain the feelings Reznor's expressing here. |

Yeah, I personally find it baffling that so many people think this is a love song. To me, it's a love song in the same sense The Police's 'Every breath you take' is: AKA it's not. It's a fucked up codependent relationship. It's them destroying themselves and everything around them, all of it because The Relationship is all that matters. |
