The Shins – Sleeping Lessons Lyrics 11 years ago
In my opinion most of the theories I see here are thinking too large, like the song is a broad representation of society, when it is quite simply a lesson to help people who can't sleep due to past experiences and how they still torment you. The "Old guard" is an individual's defense in an everyday situation, blocking them from thinking clearly. These come about when an old experience is thought about too often, far beyond wringing all meaning from them. Probably the biggest point this song is making is that you need to know when you're being held back by your past, and that it needs to be destroyed. A good indicator that something is a problem is finding yourself thinking about it so much that it keeps you awake often.

Just wondering if anyone else would agree to one change in the lyrics: "There's no design, no flaws you'll find".

Voxtrot – Rise Up In The Dirt Lyrics 11 years ago
It could have a few different meanings. The one I think has the strongest case for it is the idea that everyone will go through life not understanding why the mistakes of people in the past happened, passing them off as horrible things. But these things happen for a reason and they will happen to you if you don't see it coming. "His son" will grow up and he will most likely make these same mistakes, but it's alright because it's just human nature, and it's human nature to walk past these things in life growing into something greater.

Voxtrot – The Start of Something Lyrics 11 years ago
On the "Breaks her heart to feel her Touch" line; I feel this is a much less literal form of a law. If this is anything like what I went through (and I very much believe it is in line with your theory), then the law is something proposed out of his hope for finding a way to salvage the relationship. He will give in more and more hoping that if it's something they agree upon and fulfill, it will help and turn things around. Other than this, everything you said sounded spot on.
