Arcade Fire – We Exist Lyrics 12 years ago
Definitely got the homophobia theme the first or second listen. I find that interpretation lends the most power to the final verse:

You know that we're young
You know that we're confused
But will you watch us drown?
What are you so afraid to lose?

It's a desperate and somber plea to one's parents (or to all of society) for acceptance. And it feels very real, because Win's tone betrays the inevitably bitter and accusatory tone of anyone who's been shafted by the world.

I get the feeling has something to do with returning to a home that's grown far more religious than you, or vice versa. Wish I knew what the Barstow Boys were, I feel like it's key to the meaning.

Diagoras nailed it. Huge difference between random assholes and intimate partners using that language. If you can't recognise that difference, you've spent way too much time in the feminism echo chamber.
