Daughter – Youth Lyrics 12 years ago
I like to decipher what a song means based on if I was thinking or feeling the words, so in in some cases that means switching the gender roles. Either way, it means a lot of the same to most of who's different.

"Shadows settle on the place, that you left
Our minds are troubled by the emptiness"
- Dark thoughts as well a what is perceived as harsh and cold truths dwell.
The person(s) involved are all unable to come to terms, because everyone is too proud to inquire or be the first to admit some sort of fault. Everyone is displaying some sort of malice because no believes the other is at fault. Everyone is pointing the finger at each other.

"Destroy the middle, it's a waste of time
From the perfect start to the finish line"
- The idea of not taking a side is beckoning. There are stern opinions of what is right and wrong. Past and present ideas collide, as well as people, places and things. The catalyst may have a side chosen, but because of everything that keeps them apart, she/he is never able to make a case, or a stake a claim

"And if you're still breathing, you're the lucky ones
'Cause most of us are heaving through corrupted lungs"
- If you still in ways have your innocence, if you have not been victim or the subject in intricate and deceitful schemes, than you are truly fortunate. We all have our skepticism and speculation about who and what

"Setting fire to our insides for fun
Collecting names of the lovers that went wrong
The lovers that went wrong"
- Abusing our bodies to feel joy, to numb ourselves, to block out the idea that we may never make right what was made wrong, even though it may be more complicated than he did/she did. Looking back on past failed relationships with indifference, or maybe something other than that

"We are the reckless
We are the wild youth
Chasing visions of our futures"
- Young and stuck in our youthful ways, we don't realize how precious time is as well as the relationships that have built us and guided us over the years. People who meant the world become part of our past without a second guess based on what we are lead to believe is right. We party our years away as an escape mechanism and use the folly of our youth as an excuse. we are constantly torn about what it is we should pursue, because there in many cases there is a great different between our passion and what we need to do for security and survival.

"One day we'll reveal the truth
That one will die before he gets there
And if you're still bleeding, you're the lucky ones"
- One day, we'll be forced to face our demons. We will possibly learn the truth, or we won't, it will depend on whether the true answers are held by the one who may pass before that day of reckoning. Unfortunately, there is a good chance the ones being hurt most in this instance will never know the truth because of their inability to look past the previous mistakes. Again, everyone involved has become cold because they fear vulnerability. They fear they will be hurt or betrayed again. And if you still feel you are lucky, because many have lost their ability to feel. The act of feeling/suffering is looked at from an alternate perspective.

" 'Cause most of our feelings, they are dead and they are gone
We're setting fire to our insides for fun
Collecting pictures from the flood that wrecked our home
It was a flood that wrecked this"
- Again they have become numb. This person(s) may have faced some extreme hardship in their life and they have slowly but surely accepted the fate of what is. they review pictures of their past because those were the days that everything was good or just or right. Or at least, they thought that the people who loved them were genuine. In this case the individual may be learning that those who said they loved him/her never really loved them at all, and may, in fact be the reason this individual is facing hardship and death today.

"And you caused it
And you caused it
And you caused it"
- his/her reference to a person or group that has inflicted this detriment, that either sabotaged his/her relationships or just their life in general.

"Well I've lost it all, I'm just a silouhette
A lifeless face that you'll soon forget
My eyes are damp from the words you left"
I am a shadow. Every pedestal you ever set me on has crumbled beneath my feet because you no longer believe in me. I am forced to revel in the things I'd rather not to find any sort of comfort. Solace in anger becomes this person's only power. The person may believe that the individual's in question may have actually caused this for her/him. I am becoming more and more like what everyone expects me to and I am losing my benevolent soul in the process. I am nothing but a pale shell of what I used to be, physical and mentally sick. I am hurt by the abandonment. The writer can't believe that after all this time and all they've been through, she/he is left to face this on their own

" Ringing in my head, when you broke my chest
Ringing in my head, when you broke my chest"
- His/her heart broken. His/her spirit destroyed. The thoughts reverberate

"And if you're in love, then you are the lucky one
'Cause most of us are bitter over someone"
- speaking out to exterior sources, saying that if you do have love than you are better off than the ones who are resentful

"Setting fire to our insides for fun
To distract our hearts from ever missing them
But I'm forever missing him"
- Killing ourselves. Suicide by insertion. Using drugs and alcohol. The person they wish would reach never does. The only thing that makes him/her feel alive are the things that will be their downfall.

" And you caused it
And you caused it
And you caused it "
- Pain pointed in blame.
