I agree. Except for the line about collard greens, this really sounds to me like one big, elaborate yo-mamma joke. I love it, but it definitely sounds like more of a joke song than some of their other stuff. The rhyme scheme definitely lends itself to the joking air, I think. Despite the language and the connotation of it all, it's got sort of a Dr. Seuss feel in how it rhymes, in sort of a weird way. |

Like most people said, what I think is that the song is about the recognition that death is a natural part of life, but even so, the speaker can't accept that. It might be about dealing with loss, or the inability to deal with loss/grief ("Is this it/ Maundering about?/ And all I have is too much time,/ To understand,/ One can only love/ Life until it's ending.") The speaker, in my opinion, is talking about the loss of a loved one, and while he can accept that death comes for us all, he can't accept that he's going to lose someone he cares about, and can never see them again. |

That makes sense, especially when you consider the fact that most of these songs (The Crane Wife 1, 2, and 3 plus the Island) and maybe, just maybe When the War Came and After the Bombs, tie in to each other. A lot of songs on the Crane Wife connect, and the descriptions of how the fold is meant to be culled is characteristic of what the Shankill Butchers did, so that's most likely an accurate point. |
