This song makes me think he's referring to the book "1984" with such a gray and hopeless world. Just like in 1984, he hopes to escape that nightmare with his mate, as in "Hey girl we’ve got to get out of this place", and just like the book, no joy - life will continue to be a nightmare. |

That the world’s just passing us by"
He's telling his brother that while things seem to be boring and monotonous, as I'm sure they are in that business, when you only have a limited selection of songs to play at every gig, some of the people listening to you are living on every word, and their world will come crashing down on them if you end it all.
In other words, the world is bigger than Ray and Dave, and they owe the world the best music they can provide. And, thankfully, the song did seem to get through to Dave. |

I'm thinking it's a subtle way of Ray telling us how much he misses his sister, who died when he was very young and was his favorite sibling - it REALLY takes a toll on kids to go through that. He sees girls from that age group and just wants to be with them...as he wants to be with his sister. |

You NAILED IT. The idea of losing your closest sibling at a young age is nearly impossible for most people to imagine (especially because so many two-earner households only have one trophy-child to begin with). He CLEARLY wrote this song for her and how much it hurt him to lose her. |
