Innerpartysystem – Structure Lyrics 9 years ago
@[ohhaiicoist:9691] I can see why you'd think that. I gave that a few thoughts too, but it doesn't really match up with the other lyrics. Good point though.

Personally, this sounds to me like he's singing to his younger self and current self. He's asking why he had to change, and why he had to bend and eventually be bent and broken by the world. This can be seen with the line "When the water turned to wine, did it feel the same?" This is showing the change from childhood (water) to adulthood (the ability to drink alcohol).

Additionally, there are these lines:
"Feels like I've been here before
Now there's an empty hole where you were long ago
But things are different when you're young"
These show that he remembers his childhood, and the child in him is the empty whole. He's singing to his child self "Now there's an empty hole where you were long ago" but then he realizes that everything is different when you're young.

Then you have these lines:
"The nights are getting cold
Those faces growing old
And there is nothing you can do
So sing your sad excuses
You've got the scars to prove it
And I'm sure they'll sing along"
These are expressing the aging of himself and those from his childhood, and there's nothing you can do about growing up. He also seems to sing of how adulthood has left him with nothing but excuses and scars.

That's just what I think of this song. I've been listening to it on loop, and it just sort of seems like those moments people, even teenagers and young adults, will sometimes have when they remember the "structure" (See what I did there? Name of the song ties in too) of their childhood. Childhood was simple, plain, and structured. Adulthood can cause pain and will lead to longing for childhood. Childhood is water, adulthood is wine, and when you change from a child to an adult, you never feel the same. Of course, seeing as this is only my opinion, I could very well be wrong. Feel free to argue or agree.

I've heard some really interesting thoughts about this song. Great song. But I'm gonna throw my thoughts on the matter out there (and anyone can feel free to agree or disagree).

So when I was listening to this (and I've had it on loop for a few hours now. Sad, isn't it?) I started thinking about meanings which led me here. I'm actually surprised that no one thought about this.

I feel like this could just be exactly what everyone is saying. But at the same time, could it maybe also be about a girl who is having some sort of abusive relationship with a girl? She meets a girl and they have this affair behind the girl's boyfriend's back. There are certain negative lines that lead me to think abuse. The main ones are "You're the up-settor", "Am I your possession? Am I in demand?" and "But I'm walking on broken ground again. Oh, when will I learn? All you do is push me back in the dirt." Another few lines that might be negative (and a lot of people have said they are positive) are "Alone in the darkness, my bed's a different land. Your touch intensifies" which, if one put them in the situation of abuse, could very well be that the girl feels alone and the abuse happens in private, as many abuse cases are. Her bed is a "different land" from the outside world, which is safe.

Secondly, abusive relationships have cases where the abuser will do something nice to the one they abuse to keep them around. Lines where this can be seen are "stroking my hand" as if to comfort, and the lines "What's my position? I don't understand. Am I your possession? Am I in demand?" which could be her saying she doesn't understand the good things. "In demand" could be asking if she's in the good graces of the girl. "What's my position?" could be her asking if she's safe or not.

Now then. The main lines of the song are "I'm in the quicksand." This could be both her saying that she has this sinking feeling and she feels trapped and unable to leave, but it could also be her melting whenever the girl is kind and gentle and full of passion.

Strange and rather negative, but that's the impression I got. Feel free to argue or support what I have to say here.

Um... Can I just say that's kind of an offensive thing to say? Don't go off of stereotypes. They can be really hurtful to certain people.

Okay, I get why you're stuck on the sex thing because of the lines "My bed's a different land / Your touch intensifies" but you really should take a look at the rest of it. It's a really beautiful song with a lot of meaning and I don't think that saying it's only about sex is right. You have to look at the whole song, not just two lines. And also, I'm pretty sure La Roux (which is not just one girl but a band) wrote the song, so I would say the "about your man" was intentional. Not trying to offend, just wanted to throw that out there :)

Wow. I honestly never thought about it like that. Now that you mention it, I can see what people mean by that. Interesting perspective.

I agree with this. Especially the line "And we believe it's not the real me" in which the "we" could either mean he and his loved ones, or it could mean him and the rehab people.

The Fratellis – Whistle for the Choir Lyrics 12 years ago
I live this relationship, so allow me to explain it from my point of view.

The boy thinks he isn't good enough for her. Thus the "Because I may be a beggar and you may be the queen". He also is a fairly depressed person, but he still has hopes and dreams ((I know I may be on a downer I'm still ready to dream)) The girl is also fairly reluctant to talk until night, when she's most comfortable. ((Though it's three o'clock, the time is just the time it takes for you to talk))

The girl says she's not lonely because she's used to giving everyone the instant "I'm fine" answer. The "coming and going" is her either acting okay or acting how hurt she really is. On the other hand, the boy is also hiding himself. He's put on so many "personality masks" as I'll call them, that she needs to remove each one and look at it closely to get to know all of him.

The boy admits that he's pretty messed up and has a lot of emotional scars from past relationships and other things that have happened in his life. But he also admits that he's still enough of himself to be able to feel- he was still able to fall for her.

Then he says "even though you're a bit crazy, I still love you" because he loves her for who she is. He goes on to talk about all the crazy stuff that happens when they talk, although it's in bits and pieces. Use your imagination. It's there. He also says that it's a shame she's lonely even when she's with him. But then, he once again says that he doesn't deserve a girl like her. ((And it's a crying shame, if you would think the same. A boy like me's just irresistible)) He says he's not worth it.

Again, he says that she needs to say when she's lonely, and try to tell him what's wrong. And again, he says that she doesn't know all of him, but it's nice of her to try because he thinks that getting to know HIM is not possible anymore. But he says that to him, a girl like her is perfect.

Passenger – Staring at the Stars Lyrics 12 years ago
Personally I think it's saying that his teachers told him he could do anything if he applied himself to it (And all the teachers used to teach
You can do anything if you put your mind to it). He tried his hardest, but expected things to happen right away and quit (We put our minds to it all
But disappointment crashed the ball). He let it go and things started turning out kind of poorly for him. He ended up regretting having not waited (We could've done anything We just never quite knew it). So it's kind of a sad song about his regrets in life. Or at least the regrets of the person's point of view that Passenger was writing from.
