Cattails are a plant: https://www.nps.gov/miss/learn/nature/cattails.htm Are Caroline and Violet different people? Someone close, a mother or grandmother, lives out in the country... The first minute or so of this song is just sublime. |

| Big Thief – Randy Lyrics | 6 years ago |

I think this is about depression/mental illness...but there could be other interpretations. For me, the writer is trapped (by her illness) in her home, as if in a psychiatric unit, she is not free. Randy is the only one who sees the light in her...I'm guessing Randy is either the only one who understands her, can break through or empathizes. And perhaps Randy is the only one who can save her. The new tree is perhaps hope of recovery, the light is the will to live. Whatever it means, it is a beautiful song. I love the way the guitars seems to assemble the song from bits and pieces in the introduction. |

| I have no idea what this song is about. To be honest, I've not tried very hard to interpret it. But it just got right under my skin from the first listen and the melody goes round and round in my head. It's a really beautiful song. | |

I agree with you @[xanya:27112]. It makes me feel so sad too and it is hard to express. In short I think it is about the pain of time passing and the inevitable loss of all we care about and find meaning in. About how all of our lifetimes, the highs, the lows, our intense love for our families...everything is rendered empty by time as the world turns and everything turns to dust. Make the most of every moment. With love, S |

+1 for @[StevenPascali:26370] This cover strips out the happy synth and makes it clear how gut-wrenchingly sad these lyrics are: youtube.com/… There are some beautiful lines in this song but for me it the main chorus line that captures so much. It can be interpreted so many ways but I think the most literal is most powerful, i.e. I'm so isolated, so desperate for some contact, for some connection... I'm so desperate, so starving, that any scrap will do, even if it's the back of some sh*tty bar, "even if it's just dancing in the dark"... |

Sublime song, especially the second half where all the elements come together . Alt-J at their best here. It seems to me to be a memory, all in the past tense. Perhaps reminiscing about a girl he met in Tasmania, he remembers watching her swim. Perhaps he regrets not spending more time with her, saying something to her... but it is too late now so all he can say is "I wish you well" If you haven't seen the video it is worth a watch... Love to all you fellow Alt-J fans ;-) |

RIP Chuck, you absolute legend. The guitar that kicks this song off is still sublime to me even though I've heard it a thousand times. The other thing I absolutely love about this song is that opening verse, the picture it paints and the beautiful line: "But he could play a guitar just like a-ringing a bell" So simple but captures the awesome talent of a master guitarist (such as himself). | R.E.M. – Everybody Hurts Lyrics | 8 years ago |

I like most of the messages in this song: "hold on" "you're not alone" "don't let yourself go"....... BUT I've learned that when some people are really low (like clinically depressed) it is very unhelpful to hear that everybody hurts sometimes. It can sound like "you're just the same as everybody else but they seem to be dealing with it all better than you". It is called "invalidation" I think. It is sometimes better to help really sad people by focusing on them and their struggle without comparing them to others. I know it sounds hyper-critical but please do heed this advice if you know someone who is so low they may harm themselves. They don't need to be told their issues are just like everybody elses. |

| Moby – When It's Cold I'd Like to Die Lyrics | 9 years ago |
| If you have been listening to this song you might be feeling like me...very low. I'd just like to say to you that I've been up and down and up and down...many times...in general there are so many more good days ahead that are worth fighting for. Worth swimming forever for. Just hold onto hope, keep dreaming, keep planning, keep fighting the tide (even if you don't want to). One day something magical might happen to you. Love, S | |
| The Cure – Friday I'm in Love Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
It could be about ecstasy - in the 80's it was called 'the love drug' - alongside love for the person he partied with. The clubber lifestyle revolves around the weekend, obviously nothing matters till Friday, etc. The give away for me is right at the end "You can never get enough; Enough of this stuff" Classic song. |

| The Jayhawks – I'd Run Away Lyrics | 10 years ago |

@[emrob:5578] you might be right there. I had wondered if the baby boy was a mistake....... but I suspect it might have been more like you say, how some relationships fail to stand strong in the face of day to day reality after the new romance phase ends. With a little boy myself (and a girl) it is sad to think about how many couples split when children are very young. But for me the melody in this song is just so beautiful - it rattles around in my head for days. I love the gentle pause after 'I'd run away....." before...... "I'd run away with you baby". Sublime So he could be singing about just about anything and I'd probably love this song, just for that melody (which is a bit ironic given this is a lyrics website!) Been a while since your post - maybe it's time to put this song on for a listen :-) Peace. |

| Moby – When It's Cold I'd Like to Die Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
For me this song is about depression - kinda obvious but hear me out... Extreme fatigue and hopelessness are fundamental to clinical depression and the lines "i don't wanna swim the ocean, fight the tide, swim forever" perfectly capture what I have felt when deeply depressed, i.e. just too tired and too hopeless to live life. Existential capitulation. The first two lines make the link between cold and loneliness. So "when it's cold I'd like to die" = being alone and being depressed leads me to think of suicide. This song makes me cry because I have felt this way so many times in my life. It makes me feel it all, every intense ache. Love to everyone who is touched by this song x |

| Everything Everything – The Peaks Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I feel this song is about how we are shaped by our experiences. The crux of this song for me is "And I’ve seen more villages burn than animals born, I’ve seen more towers come down than children grow up" If you've seen/been through a lot of bad times then you tend to feel that shape you. you might be idealistic vs cynical for example. the same theme is here in these lines: "And I’ve seen more criminals hung than innocents walk, I’ve seen more horrors made real than dreamers wake up" beautiful lyrics, really touch me. |

| Violent Femmes – Good Feeling Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I am bipolar and have struggled to find lasting happiness my whole life. No matter how hard I try depression's cold hand touches my shoulder and my'good feelings' drain way. So for me this song is about being a person susceptible to repeating depression. I don't know if Gordon Gano is bipolar but this song speaks to me on that level. |

| Cold War Kids – Tuxedos Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
I think this song is about a divorce/split, which involved a ruined event/celebration (perhaps a wedding). He takes the blame for everything, for being fake and admits it for the millionth time. The song beautifully captures the tragedy and regret involved. But the most interesting aspect is the implication that things could have been different. If he had made a 'great speech' perhaps it would have changed something. And while he laments about her new lover ('the eyes that watch you') he thinks about 'the changes' he has made: implying that although he was to blame, some of those problems don't exist anymore. |

I love the mood of this song. I also love the way it builds to the final verse, that incredible crescendo: I think about eyes that watch you. I think about changes I've made. I think about all this fancy food Going down the drain, down the drain, down the drain Going down the drain, down the drain, down the drain Going down the drain, the drain, the drain, the drain, the drain Going down the drain |
