It's very possible that I could be wrong, but I think that this song has something to do with Pete's depression and state of mind that it puts you in. I can relate quite a bit, since I have it pretty badly too. I'm a young one Stuck in the box Of an old ones head When all the others were just stirring awake I'm trying to trick myself to fall asleep again ::He feels like an old soul. Depression often leaves you stuck in your own mind, making you reflect on a lot of stuff; more than maybe a normal person would. It also really messes with your sleep:: Whoa My head's in heaven My soles are in hell Let's meet in the purgatory of my hips and get well ::His mind wants to do the right thing, but he can't get his body to do it. All he can do is hope for help:: [Chorus] Hurry, hurry You put my head in such a flurry, flurry (Freckle, Freckle) What makes you so special? What makes you so special? I'm gonna leave you I'm gonna teach you How we're all alone (How we're all alone, how we're all alone) ::I'm almost positive that it says *freckle* which, surprise! actually makes sense. A freckle is also known as a blemish. He's wondering what makes his blemish so special as to demand so much attention. When you are depressed or lonely, it's extremely easy to see the sad side of everything, hence the "I'm gonna teach you how we're all alone":: Give me, build me It's your club, so let me in (let me in) oh Knowing how heartwarming It is inside your skin ::He feels like he's looking in on the world, waiting for someone to let him in. He gets a little bitter seeing how happy everyone else is:: Anyways, that's just a rough idea. It's very hard to explain this one. |

When there's nowhere else to run Is there room for one more son One more son ~'Son' in reference to we are all sons and daughters of God. When he's sick and tired of fighting temptation, he turns to God~ If you can hold on If you can hold on, hold on ~This is kind of advice, maybe from experience. It's when times get tough that you need to be the strongest~ I want to stand up, I want to let go You know, you know - no you don't, you don't ~Temptations are all over the place, and sometimes it's confusing. People say they know what it's like but they never really do. I want to shine on in the hearts of men I want a meaning from the back of my broken hand ~He wants to be/do something important~ Another head aches, another heart breaks I am so much older than I can take ~'Older' can also mean more mature or wise. He was taught was mistakes not to make, but as he watches other people make them, he almost left out~ And my affection, well it comes and goes I need direction to perfection, no no no no ~He has mixed feelings. He doesn't feel like being perfect~ Help me out Yeah, you know you got to help me out Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner You know you got to help me out ~He's asking the world to quit making life harder for him by contradicting his beliefs~ And when there's nowhere else to run Is there room for one more son These changes ain't changing me The gold-hearted boy I used to be ~He's made changes in his life, tried different things out, but in the end he never really changed as much and he thought he did~ Yeah, you know you got to help me out Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner You know you got to help me out You're gonna bring yourself down Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down ~Your just ruining yourself by trying to take me down~ I got soul, but I'm not a soldier(x10) ~He's got a lot of passion but he's not about to be like everyone else~ Yeah, you know you got to help me out Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner You know you got to help me out You're gonna bring yourself down You're gonna bring yourself down Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down Over and again, last call for sin While everyone's lost, the battle is won With all these things that I've done All these things that I've done ~In the end, the rest of the world and all the sins he once thought tempting really did screw themselves over, and he won the battle not because he was perfect, but because he learned from his mistakes. (Time, truth, hearts) If you can hold on If you can hold on It's a bit rough, my interpretation, but there ya go. This one is extra tough to put into words without directly quoting the song! ;) |

For me, this song is about having a safe place to hide. Life is hard and times get tough, and there's a constant war between good and evil, which makes it important to have someone by your side. Here's a little more specific breakdown: 1st verse-He wants her to quite putting walls up so he can comfort and help her Chorus-When your doing the best you can to be a good person and uphold your values etc. it's okay to lay down and let the world do their own fighting 2nd verse-He expresses that when he's with her, he forgets about the outside world 3rd verse-I think that this one is pretty self-explanatory. I think that the music video does a beautiful job of explaining the idea of the song as well, so y'all should check it out. I am LDS (Mormon) myself, and our church is strongly structured around the foundation of strong families and marriage, if that helps anyone get a little more insight. Anyways..I would love here what you guys think :) |

| As a Mormon myself, I personally actually think that you are quite accurate. I obviously don't know for sure, but it seems to make perfect sense. Good job! ;) | |

Alright everyone, ready for a crapload of stuff? You better be, because....incoming! Just recently, I bought this album (21st Century Breakdown) and have been attempting to decipher it. I decided to write it here, hopefully to help myself fill in any discrepancies, and maybe even help a few of you! 21st Century Breakdown is what I like to call a "loose rock opera". In other words, it has a storyline in which all the songs co-exist, but is not quite as structured as, say American Idiot. This basically just means that the imagery or physical side of the story is subject to change depending on the person listening. For instance; through interviews with the band, I've found that the characters Gloria and Christian are not really lovers, however, I can see how they can easily be mistaken for that. That's the fabulous part of music, it can mean whatever you want it to mean! 1. Song of the Century~This one kind of gives a sneak peak into the album and sets the mood. 2. 21st Century Breakdown~I believe that this one introduces the character Christian, who is becoming an adult and starting to form his own beliefs. He is a little bitter about his childhood: raised in a sucky town by sucky parents with a sucky looking future. He also knows what he doesn't want to be, which is anything like his parents' generation. He want to do something meaningful and profound rather being part of the "working class". 3. Know Your Enemy~Christian continues developing his opinions. He becomes very independent and confrontational. He decides who his enemies are. 4. ¡Viva La Gloria!~Christian meets a character named Gloria, who (is religious maybe?) has her own set of beliefs, which are very different from his. She is very pure of heart, and wants peace and equality. Christian tries to convince her to join his point of view by telling what she could have. 5. Before the Lobotomy~This one is from Gloria's point of view. After meeting Christian, her eyes are opened to the changing world that seems to be becoming increasingly cynical and harsh. She reflects on the days when things were simpler and anarchy wasn't as prominent, and contemplates the coming generation's condition. 6. Christian's Inferno~ Christian becomes increasingly angry and leaves. He goes off to find people to join him. 7. Last Night On Earth~Even through all the struggle she faces, Gloria knows that the one thing on earth that will always be sacred is love. If all else fails, she sends her heart to the person she loves. 8. East Jesus Nowhere~Preaching to and rallying people, Christian mocks religion and saying "God is nowhere to be found". 9. Peacemaker~Christian and his followers hit the streets to actually make something happen. They set out to take down the peacemakers. 10. Last of the American Girls~Gloria begins to settle back into a normal life. She finds her place and who she wants to be. She is paving her own road while still trying to be a good person. 11. Murder City~Gloria begins to see the influence Christian's ideas are having on people, because she is finding them all over the place. She desperately wants to help, but can't seem to figure out how. 12. ¿Viva la Gloria? (Little Girl)~In her attempts to help, Gloria meets Christian yet again. Christian waves her away, basically saying that her cause if lost and it's useless to fight. He also points out that she isn't perfect, trying to convince her that she's a sinner just like everyone else. 13. Restless Heart Syndrome~Gloria is knocked down at first by Christian's comments on her mistakes, but reminds him that what comes around goes around; she repented for her sins, but his are going to come bite him in the a@#. She adds the last jab "know your enemy", and leaves him to deal with his own consequences. 14. Horseshoes and Handgrenades~Christian is taken aback by the strength Gloria's comeback. Pushing away any guilt he may feel deep down, he attempts to make an even stronger resolve in his mission, but he can't help but wonder about what she said. 15. The Static Age~Gloria can still see all the world's imperfections, but throws her hands up and just doesn't care. Daily life has become so cluttered with corporation crap that it's almost amusing. She's given up on trying to change the world and is living her life the way she wants to. 16. 21 Guns~Things just keep going down hill for Christian. Nothing turned out like he wanted it to and he eventually gives up. He looks back on all he's done and wonders if it was all worth it, realizing that he'll never be honored (hence the 21 gun salute). 17. American Eulogy~Christian and Gloria watch as America spirals downwards, and eventually crashes and burns. And then it all starts over again. People want change once more. Both characters learn that it's a vicious cycle. 18. See the light~A final proclamation of all anyone wants from life: to see the light, to learn and find some way to end up where we want to go. The End! :) Yup, there we are. That took way longer than I thought it would, but I think I finally figured it out somewhat. In the end, I find that Christian and Gloria simply represent two different roads going the same way (ie-1.They are both finding what they believe in 2. They find it and are on the top of their game 3. They are both called to action 4. They are knocked down but stand by their beliefs 5. They give up on the world 6. In the end, they just wanted the same thing). Soo..yeah. |

Like many others it seems, I find this song very political. Now, I'll admit right now that I don't know crap about politics, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I believe that it is mainly about where America seems to be headed, and the conditions of it's government. There are many subdivisions of this idea in American Idiot. You could find a new problem we're facing in each stanza, which I won't get into in detail. But, that's my two cents...so yeah. I'm quite new to Green Day, as I'm somewhat young and wasn't actually alive when they first became popular, but the more I hear the more I love them. I'm finding that their music is much deeper and relateable than I originally thought, and honestly wish that I had gotten into them sooner! :P I kinda wish that they wouldn't swear so much though, it makes listening as a religious person a bit difficult. |

I couldn't agree with you more frozoneify @AGirlLovesBeer-I think that you're right in a way, but remember that there is a difference between doing what you love and making a living off of it, and searching for moola. |

Wow halgerl, your comment really got me thinking. Here's were my thoughts went: What if it was something other than insanity luring her away? Something darker? The devil? I'm looking for a place to start-maybe she's gone through some traumatic event and is looking for a way to relieve the stress And everything feels so different now.-she's going through shock, obviously everything has changed Just grab a hold of my hand I will lead you through this wonderland.-the devil saying "it's okay, come with me and I'll make everything better" Water up to my knees But sharks are swimming in the sea.-she goes with him and thinks "it's okay, I'm not that far in yet" but deep inside of her she knows that dangerous things lurk in these waters, and it's hard to get to shore once you're out at sea Just follow my yellow light And ignore all those big warning signs.-he's telling her that it's all in her head and nothing is wrong Somewhere deep in the dark A howling beast hears us talk.-she's starting to realize what a bad choice she's made, and even though she can't see anything, she senses the terrible things to come I dare you to close your eyes And see all the colors in disguise.-he tries to convince her that she's just not looking at the situation right/it may look rough now, but really, things are great Running into the night The earth is shaking and I see a light.-she realizes what she's done and tries to escape her choices The light is blinding my eyes-he keeps her in the dark with him As the soft walls eat us alive.-dark things were never build on a sound foundation, and the structure is flimsy, and the longer they stay, the more they fade away Wow, that was really dark. I scared myself :I Just to make things clear: I don't think that OMAM are devil worshipers or anything, and neither am I, this is just where my mind went I guess. And even if this IS how they meant this song to be interpreted (which I doubt), I don't think that they were encouraging people to go out and seek evil and dark things. Rather the opposite actually. To remind people what has, and will happen. The song is actually quite beautiful and sad rather than dark. Anyways...... (I'm actually not a creep I swear ;) ) |

In my opinion, some of you are over-thinking this. I don't think that they were trying to create some sort of parallel to another specific war in real life, but rather, create a cry of truth. Let me explain myself: Sometimes young minds romanticize the idea of war and being a hero. And sometimes it IS epic and fantastical, but sometimes (most of the time) it's tragic and devastating even for those who won. I think that this song is just stating that, or, in other words, saying: what is is, and what will be will be. That was probably super confusing, but oh well. :/ I have different theories about this song other than the one above, but this one was the most interesting to me. Anyways, that's just my two cents. Love this song btw - cuz you totally needed to know that ;) |
