I've always thought this song was fairly obviously about the effects of aging on a pretty girl (i.e., Stevie Nicks, who was quite young and pretty when she wrote that song). Pretty girls often obsess about their fears of losing their looks as they age. "When you see my reflection in the SNOW COVERED hills - will the LANDSLIDE bring you down?" -Snow covering is often a metaphor for the white hair of aging, and the "landslide" is a very good metaphor for sagging, aging skin. -"My reflection in the snow covered hills" -when you look at an older person's face, you may still see a REFLECTION of what they once looked like, -if you knew them when they were younger, you see their face NOW, but can REFLECT upon what they used to look like, and then still see those recognizable characteristics. -But, will the LANDSLIDE still "bring you down?" - she worries. And this can ALL be summed up in this verse: "Well, I've been afraid of changin' 'Cause I've built my life around you But time makes you bolder Even children get older And I'm getting older too And I'm getting older too" -Seems obvious enough to me. |

These lyrics sound very much like an old, over-the-hill jazz artist trying to woo a pretty young thing less than half his age. Just read between the lines of the lyrics. "If I told you I love you, pretty baby, Would it make up for what they say?" - -People generally only have annoying things to say about things that annoy THEM. "Look at the old fart with that 20-something pretty young thing! He's old enought to be her grandfather!" "And someday will find us Where people won't bind us To the hands of time." -Ok, now, could that be any more obvious? "bound (by the `twitterers') to the The Hands Of TIME?" "There are so many things I'll teach you, And they call me a useless bum." -So now he's gonna be her TEACHER, huh? Guess what he's going to try to TEACH. -Hey, this happens all the time - but he'd better be RICH, or he can FORGET ABOUT IT, and he'll be in for a REALITY CHECK. |
