| This song has a much more literal meaning to me, reminding me of a very specific event in my life. I was flying from San Francisco to Hong Kong in 1995, as countless flyers can relate to, there are WICKED and often unpredictable jet-stream currents as you cross the International Dateline approaching Japan. The plane I was on hit one of those and dropped WHO KNOWS hundreds of feet. I was sleeping and awoke to screaming. Though belted in, I knew I was weightless as my drink was floating in front of me. The flight attendants assumed a ball position and they too were floating. I was sure I was about to die and a MILLION thoughts went through my head; saying my goodbye's to my wife, thinking what a rip-off as we had just bought our first house, and basically turning out the lights in my head and thinking, "Well, let's end it here". It might have lasted only 5 or 6 seconds but it SEEMED much longer. Finally the wings bit into air and everything in the cabin crashed to the floor. But I was ABSOLUTELY SURE I was about to die. I was surprisingly calm and blaze through it all, very much like the tenor of the song. But I am ALWAYS reminded of that event when I hear this song. | |

I want to expand a bit on the "Pretty Kate" lyric and my small connection with that. First, yes, any girl named Kate who had met the band might imagine it is about her. HOWEVER, if you saw a picture of "my" Katie, you would know she was VERY unique. I quickly became used to EVERYONE complimenting her and remarking on her beauty anywhere we went together. She was also VERY modest and down to earth which is why I know the story is true. Now the "sex ornate" line was NOT something she ever alluded to nor did I ask her about it (I didn't want to embarrass her) AND I'm the type of guy who would rather not know anything about my girlfirends' past personal life, etc. THAT BEING SAID (and I have to REALLY be careful here as I don't want my BEAUTIFUL wife or Kate to be irritated if they read this), Kate was BY FAR the most incredible woman in bed. She had a knack for the "theatric" and could create very romantic and elaborate "stages" for sex. I didn't realize it at the time (funny), but SEX ORNATE is a PERFECT way to describe Kate's dramatic and exciting approach to sex. So although I don't know this for certain (and at the time I DIDN'T WANT TO KNOW), I'm going to bet it's more than chance that line was added (she had some kind of "trist" with a band member). Katie, if you read this, PLEASE KNOW THIS IS A COMPLIMENT!! How did a schmuck like me end up dating her (and many other gorgeous women) culminating with my wife Tina (who is a knock-out, take a look at our Google page)? I'd like to say it's my sparkling personality, a great sense of humor and ab amazing lover. Closer to the truth is that I am 6'3", blond, blue eyes, and even at 23 I was rich b/c of old family money. At 47 I am still asked to model occasionally so I suppose it's safe to say girls find me easy on the eyes. ;) But I digress.... I just wanted to expand a bit on the "sex ornate" line. Although TO BE TOTALLY SURE, the band members or Katie would need to confirm this, but I'm fairly sure about this, or it is an AMAZING coicidence b/c "sex ornate" was EXACTLY what having sex with Katy was like..... |

| I have a MUCH more literal interpretation culled from an actual experience of mine: I was flying from San Francisco to Hong Kong and somewhere over Japan we hit a wind-sheer and dropped about 200 feet. I mean a FREE FALL of 200 feet, everything in the cabin was just floating for a few second. The flight attendants, used to this, all dropped into a ball as if chroeographed. I was NOT wearing my seat belt and so was "untied and weightless", asleep but "woke up to the sound of screaming", and ABSOLUTELY SURE this was it!!! You know, battening down the hatches, thinking of my wife back home, life flashing before my eyes, sure that I was going to "end it here". But the wings suddenly found a handle and EVERYTHING that was floating suddenly crashed to the ground. This song ALWAYS reminds me of that experience. | |
