I think this song is pretty straightforward, with the last verse being perhaps the most subliminal of all. Its pretty much about living in a world where there is a constant threat of worrying about your future, worrying about your status, being concerned about people talking about you and being concerned that you live on a mundane street with a house that is not as impressive as someone else's. Then, in the middle of all that, you look to what makes you happy, where you find your comfort, and all that other stuff doesn't really seem that important anymore. In this case, its the beauty of nature and the comfort of the person he is with. If he can have those things, who cares what else is going on? I think that is such a refreshing idea. The last verse is a little more difficult to understand. Perhaps he's saying that he could have that life that everyone else hold in such high esteem, with the nice house in a nice neighborhood etc., but would rather be where he is. |

Several of Matt's songs seem to have a similar theme of losing someone in a relationship, yet they all have a different attitude. Maybe its just me, but this song seems to have a bit of a nonchalant attitude. By that I mean that it just seems like he is kind of accepting that "yeah, this is just another breakup and I'll move on... again." Its like he wants to tell himself that this is not a big deal, but as the song carries on, it comes more and more to the realization that he really doesn't want this to end. He really wants this one to work. "If you remain in me, I will remain in you." |

What a hauntingly beautiful song. It is incredible how well Matt can articulate emotion into lyrics and music. This song is about seeing someone so beautiful and being so incredibly attracted to them, yet having to cope with the fact that she "won't belong, no not to me." It paints a picture of seeing the one you want and the pain that comes with not being able to have them. |

I think this song, at its bare meaning, is just about doing things you know you aren't supposed to, and the youthful thrill of it. There's an obvious connotation to drugs, but even still, I think the choice of using "chocolate" as the imagery is masterful. Wasn't chocolate the first thing we all wanted, even enough to steal it when we knew we weren't supposed to have it? Just a metaphor for the excitement of engaging in the things we know we shouldn't, but just can't get enough of. |
