I agree pretty much with all you said, but i think the lines where the mother says shes never met a man who can love and that he should have a bit more trust is in regards to her christian belief that all humans will let you down in the end-and so trust in the Lord (or the "father" as you mentioned) I also believed that the bridge where he is chatting with a "friend" Is when he is questioning his previous beliefs. He is wondering, aren't i a good man? And he considers how the world has become despite all the "good" of mankind. I think HE is the speaker in the last chorus, speaking to a friend, saying that he now believes the things his family believed as well. I also believe that the verse regarding the fisherman shows that he tried to believe and find savior and hope in religion, but he couldn't because (in the net verse) of his sin and disbelief. SHOOT this song is so deep, i wonder how anyone can listen to regular music and not find it childish ahahaha. Listen to Doubting Thomas, it has a similar message as this one! |

| hun, i don't think he is copying bright eyes. the line "praying for the rain" is a biblical allusion to the christian belief that those who have trust in the lord will prepare their fields and pray for the rain to come and allow their crops (or blessings/needs) to come or grow. James Vincent was expressing his beginning belief that he would rather work towards something that hope with no action. This is an incredibly old belief among atheists or non Christians, and Bright Eyes probably drew upon that belief and put it into more secular terms, so these two artists where both drawing upon similar beliefs that they had, not copying each other or anyone else.
