I always thought this song was an indictment of celebrities on trial(O.J.,etc)."Do they know I sing?" as if saying, Do they know that I'm famous, and the rules are different for me. Stipe's long list of potential defenses to be used, feeling of regret that only they were caught, and a celebrity's ability, allure ,and cult of personality to "charm a jury" to get off. |

I always thought the song was about hating one's life and wanting to escape. Nothing is more free than a bird flying away .The barriers of one's life(mean cats) always interferes. |
