| CHVRCHES – Now Is Not the Time Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
This song makes me think of a pair of survivors of some disaster who find themselves in a world where they need to rely on each-other to survive, but which also leaves no room for real relationships. There's no space for words, since they now have to fight against something much bigger than either of them. "Vicious one how ever did you find me?" She's speaking here to the person responsible for the disaster. "Now it seems that we are not crazy And lovers sow what lovers reap" Maybe her and her lover predicted the disaster, and so their 'harvest' is their survival. (many other interpretations here). "Nothing now can ever come between us As we hide and watch the city burn" They know that from here on out, they'll need to rely on each-other completely, and have each-other's backs. "There is much that I still want to tell you But now is not the time to speak of love" But they know that the world they now live in leaves no space for normal relationships. "Live in fear I cannot be your savior There is no violence in your heart" But she also thinks of her companion as less prepared than her in some way; as someone who will either have to learn violence, or who will need help surviving beyond what she can provide. "Warriors are both time and patience But you and I are worlds apart" The bit about warriors is from Tolstoy. I think she's saying that she is a warrior and her companion is not? Unsure. "We all, we all, we all saw the light We are, we are, we are first and right" I think here, she's saying that they now know to put each-other first, and that their survival is something of a righteous cause. Anyhow, just the images that this song makes me think of. |

John introduced this song once with: "This is a song about how, when sometimes, sometimes you find it necessary to rob the safe in the restaurant where you work. And they, and it's funny, because your friends who, like, have good jobs say "What good can come of that," and here I quote your friends: "They only have about two thousand dollars in there." If you were honest with your friends, you'd say "Look, two thousand dollars will buy me a quarter pound of peanut butter crank, and I'll be going for a good ten days off that, unless I meet up with some friends." Then you may stop to think to yourself, that you're likely to meet up with some friends. New friends! People you didn't really know, until word began to spread in the neighbourhood. "John robbed the safe! And he took all 2k, and he bought a quarter pound! He's in room ten, 253 north broadway, you can't miss it. Faces broadway at an angle across from the colosseum, and so there you are with your new friends, listening to king diamond, as you do, high for three days and beginning to talk nonsense, and you may think to yourself "I wish I had a song to sing." You may only hold this thought for a second or so, but I heard you, when you thought that, and that's why I wrote you things song." |

My interpretation of this song, in broad terms: It's about how, sometimes, when bad things happen, you can take pleasure in knowing, deep down, that you do deserve it, just as you know that any and all happiness is only possible due to equal parts healthy self-delusion and the blood and indentured sweat of faraway poor people. It's about knowing, or thinking, that the world is terrible, along with everyone who lives there and few more than yourself. |

I think it's just about life in general. Sometimes, nobody really cares about you unless you do something to get their attention. You only get what you want if you allow yourself to be exploited. Likewise, one could imagine how a depressed individual is entirely without help but is mourned heavily by a community which did nothing for them. And this sucks. People living uncared for, not getting sympathy or doing what they want. But, like the song says, you're just going to live with it. You might be crying now, but then you'll get some water and take a few breaths and you'll just keep doing the same things you've always done. 'Me', in this interpretation, is a sort of general avatar of society. You just learn to accept that nobody really cares and keep on living, since we're programmed genetically to keep going until we die despite even destructive metaphysical angst. After all, everyone else (father, sister, husband) are still alive and going, even if they're all miserable too. Just suck it up. |

Just discovered this album a couple weeks ago. Today I found out an old friend has cancer, and it doesn't look good. Fuck cancer. |
