Okkervil River – Plus Ones Lyrics 12 years ago
this is the song that got me absolutely hooked on Okkervil River, they, along with shearwater, the mountain goats, and Manchester orchestra are all that I listen to now, OkRiv taking up about 75% of that.
I think that this song is about someone, not necessarily WS, breaking up with a music lover who cheated on him.
the singer seems bitter and resentful, and is using her main love, music, as a weapon against her.
"no one wants to here you"
"you're not worth a song"
etc.
my favorite line is "What's new pussycat, is that you were once a lioness" and when he addresses her in the next like as kitten.
I love all of the other music references, and think that WS is increadable

Okkervil River – The Velocity of Saul at the Time of His Conversion Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this song is about the relapse of a guy with a drug addiction, probably acid.

the first verse seems to be when he's injecting himself, knowing it's stupid, but not caring.

the line about friends reminds me of the saying "a drug addict doesn't have friends, only connections".

It seems like he's been sober for a while, and is justifying his relapse.

although its a crazy depressing idea I love the chorus, it seems filled with bitterness and self hatred as he gives up "The fight" he's married and recognizes that at this point he choosing drugs over "you and I"
he's given up, enough of prevail or walk in the light.
relapsing is super dangerous because people think they can still handle their older dosage, that's were the angles come in, waiting to take him away.

I also really love how he expresses his self doubt. he gains confidence, as the drugs take him, that he's doing what he really wanted to do, but at the same time he know's he's that's a lie.

The "best laid plans" are the precautions he and his support system have taken so that he doesn't relapse.

I think that he's tripping way harder than he had expected, and is afraid of dying. he wants to call his wife, maybe to come and get him, but is ashamed of himself, and afraid of how she'll react.

I think that the spacecraft is his high, and after he's ridden it, it's gone, leaving him alone, on the ground, feeling worthless, and hoping people won't give up on him.

That's my interpretation, my wife thought it was about suicidal thoughts, I also really liked the ideas you guys had as I read through earlier comments.
