I agree, cftw. I love this song... so simple and nostalgic; youthful innocence from an older, wiser perspective. I seem to remember reading that Brian wrote it with Mike in mind. It always put in that warm, sunny, optimistic Beach Boys frame of mind. Back in the day, I thought the line was "help me get out of my head", but listening now it's clear that it's hole (or home). |

| Carole King – Alabaster Lady Lyrics | 11 years ago |

In her autobiography, "A Natural Woman", Carole writes that the song was inspired by her perception of the relationship between David Crosby and his younger girlfriend, Nancy Brown. She mentions Crosby's generosity in remaining her friend, "even after he heard that lyric in which I was highly judgmental of him." She also refers to layers of meaning in songs that are not always apparent to the writer, at least at first, mentioning her subsequent realization that she was speaking to herself, as well as to Nancy. It's a beautiful song! |

| Donovan – Clara Clairvoyant Lyrics | 11 years ago |

The 1970 "Open Road" album was part of a change in approach for Donovan. This song stood out to me. It's more cynical, more jaded, than what we'd come to expect from Donovan. He does not leave scept'ism at the door. The world is changing. Clara is attempting to contact, while not quite living on, the other side. Kathy's in consultations of her own, apparently confessions with a questionable priest. Rocky's manic and drifting without an anchor of conviction or comfort. At the end,we get a reference to the Psychedelic Yogi who's not a very groovy guru. Donovan had been into The Maharishi along with The Beatles and similarly let down. Does anybody know of literal back stories on Clara, Kathy or Rocky or have any insights into this song? |

| Thanks for the comment explaining the Ralph Emory incident. The line at the end of the song, "This one's for you, Ralph" made me wonder if they were talking about Ralph Emory. Very interesting. | |
